Would that Matt Williams, the new 'technical director', be one and same as the former coach of the Waratahs?

I recollect the then Tahs coach went overseas after his stint...

Matt Williams went to Leinster after getting the sack at the Tahs in 1999. Leinster sacked him before he moved over the Irish Sea, to coach Scotland. Scotland sacked him so he returned to Oz, to coach the Pirates. The Pirates sacked him before he headed off overseas again, to Ulster. Ulster sacked him and, after an appropriate period of rest and recuperation, he pops up at Shamrock Warriors, Ireland's new Sevens outfit.

Anybody see a pattern here?

Spot on, he's the same guy.

He does alot of punditry in Ireland for Setanta and does a bit of newspaper work too.. we've made him an honorary Irishman!

Williams' tenure of Ulster was marked by some *ahem* disappointing runs of results, but I recall that he did a reasonable job with Leinster? He's a decent pundit anyhow, but whether you could call him a decent coach? Time will tell.

Also, not so on topic, but a variety of Australian rugby troubadours joined us during Williams' tenure, ranging from success stories like former Reds fullback 'Shifty' Clinton Schifcofske and some less successful such as former Brumbies and Western Force backrow Tamaiti Horua, who unfortunately suffered a career-ending back injury after only a few games with Ulster. There may have been a few more I can't recall (Ed O'Donoghue?).

So Shifcofske went well in Ireland? He was a handy player for the Reds during years where they really struggled, and was a bit of a shame they lost him as he was consistent and well-liked. Good goal kicker. Incidentally, Shifcofske had a most unfortunate League career, only getting a few SOO caps for Queensland as he was frequently stuck behind some freakish players like Lockyer, etc.

Ed O'Donoghue wasn't much chop, I thought. Former Reds lock, who only was a bench player for the Reds at best during his few years there. Had Irish roots, but grew up in Brisbane, so was Irish qualified. When he was at the Reds he played a bit light, and not overly effectively. Looked like more of a lineout lock who needed to up his workrate and effectiveness. Didn't he make the Irish team, though, one year?

Shifty's goal kicking was what he was signed for originally, but it was his solid play at the back that I liked most. As for Ed O'Donoghue, the man essentially ran the Ulster lineout in the 09/10 season, but was somewhat light on the grunt work side of things. He plays for Leinster now.

Sounds typical of a Leinster player alright! I think he has come on a good bit though.. injured at the moment as far as I'm aware.

Ye Matt's a fairly good pundit in my eyes now, likes getting into the nuts and bolts of things which is interesting to watch

A transplanted Fijian playing for Japan in the Shield final in Adelaide for the Aussie leg of the world 7s is named as Lote Turqui...
