I'm pretty sure I don't like this

The hats are a good idea as people will keep them and bring them to future games. Cards are OK for a pre-game show but tend to be tossed, folded up etc. after that. Flags are a great way to create colour throughout the game. But I've never brought my Leinster ones back to a subsequent game.

I think the best combo would be the hats available at every game and then the free flags for the Bledisloe. Maybe each year they could have a different hat and before you know it the Aus crowd will start to look as crazy as the ones we get at the 6Ns.

I think the ARU should be bending over backwards to accommodate the supporters group. But I still think this is a good move by them and there's no reason they can't do both.

I can think of a few ways the hats better.
The person behind you can still see the game when you have your hat on.
The hat is visible all the time not just when you wave it.
It keeps your head warm.

When you engage in these sort of tactics, you acknowledge that you will sacrifice your own vantage point/comfort somewhat.

It's about the boys, above all else.

I thought it's always warm & sunny in Sydney? ;)

For the prices they charge to go to the games and then what they stick you for to buy any kind of food once you're there, there is no way I would want to sacrifice my view of the game so that someone else can wave a flag in support.

Support by sitting your arse down and allowing us all to support as well. Shout, scream, jump up with the rest of us when something exciting happens but don't block my view.

Just type QWHOOD into the presale box and get your silly hat already!

This stupid hat with Wallabies jersey & cape combo + beer will add plenty of excitement to my night out.

Yep it will add plenty to mine too! Just bought my silly hat, sorry QWHOOD, tickets! YEW!!! It may even add to the amount of people getting vocal at the game. If you get a bunch of people sitting in the one area and they're already feeling a little silly, that may be all they need to get them acting even more silly! ;-)

Can't wait!

Plus if we manage to jag a win in the Sydney game then this game may well be the decider and if that's the case it will be immense!

These hood things look like they'll be excellent to swing wildly around your head in celebration too. Sort of like a scarf but with a bit of extra clout...

Yep, just sew half a brick into each end of the hat and you'll have a whole heap of clout.

I think any addition of gold to the crowd is welcomed and the kids will lap this one up.

Now if only the ARU would spend half as much time trying to develop grass-roots rugby as they did coming up with gimmicks like this, we might actually grow the game here.

Just out of interest, how many members does the Troup have?

I saw the banner at the Nixon bar in Melbourne prior to Wales 2 and there didn't seem to be a whole heap of people there.

I only ask because a handful of members would not hold a lot of incentive for the ARU to strike any special deal, especially with glut of supporters groups already, such as the Fanatics/We Love Rugby, Australian Sports Tours, S15 Members, etc, etc, etc.

There's 200+ registered in the database, mostly from NSW, QLD & VIC (in that order). As to whether that turns into active support, that remains to be seen.

We are not after a special deal, just an allocation with the same ticket prices etc in on area. Our resources pale in comparison to those organizations you mention, plus they earn a profit etc.

You need to start somewhere.

Yeah, the ARU need to get behind this. Grass roots support is exactly what they need to be cultivating. Even if they don't actively support a single 'group' as such, they should earmark a bay for the 'loud and proud' supporters. Critical mass is a great thing and the last thing we need is a Tahs style hush at Wallabies games.

Having said that, trying to come up with their own marketing tools is also no bad thing. Although the 'golden suits' were a bit dodgy, the hat idea is not a bad one. At least it's something people are likely to hold onto and bring back. The brumbies have made a bit of an institution out of their yellow caps which at least clearly demonstrates the home ground support.

Exactly - for those that follow 3 mungo games a year as I do, will know excatly what cna happen when you 'start somewhere'. Blatchy's Blues is HUGE now!

Batchys blues isn't a supporter group though, it's a ticket option, no different to the golden suits castrol offered. They try to dress it up as something it really isn't. It does look good though.

It started out as just a guy and a few mates that sat together wearing blue wigs. NSWRL saw the value in it and got behind it and as a result it is now a ticket option, which is what Kronic is hoping to do for the Troup I imagine.

The trouble being, the original supporter group may very well get lost in the crowd so to speak.

Yeah, was just pointing out, it's not a supporters group anymore, it's just a heap of people that get a wig and tshirt with their ticket.

Scoey is on the mark it seems.

For people who are like-minded, the Troup is for you. We also exist as a catalyst for support on game days, in a tactical and facilitation sense.

The former is about having a positive effect on supporters around us, eg. joining in on songs and/or providing resources for visual support (eg. balloons like the Melbourne test).

The latter is viewing the game as an event, more than the 80 minutes itself. Providing meetups etc.
