Its good to see action from RUPA. But I'm not at all sure this is the best choice of action. Love their petition.

If the Force or Rebels are cut, do you guys believe that the corresponding NRC team will go also? Especially in the case of Perth, with the distances involved? Or does Fiji's inclusion negate concerns about travel cross-continent?

If I'm the Force & we get cut from Super Rugby no way in hell am I putting out a NRC team as that's pretty much my only way of saying "Fuck You, ARU".

The rising is technically owned by Coxy's mob (as are the U20s) as well.

I could imagine the VRU managing to put together a wooden spoon winning side at short notice, particularly if a few Rebels boys stayed.

But it wouldn't happen.

stand corrected, it cant occur until Dec 31, until the current CBA finishes.. So during Super Rugby pre-season...

The interesting point there is that the ARU are currently negotiating a new CBA with RUPA, and with this threat of a team been cut and the number of jobs getting reduced.. You can imagine what kind of impact thats having on negotiations.

Under a broadly worded clause stating that the competition structure, including player arrangements, be approved by RUPA, these options include vetoing the proposed introduction of Fiji into the competition this year, influencing which Australian teams take part and which players play where.

Personally, with what's coming out of the ARU (or complete lack-thereof), I rate it a zero chance that the NRC is played this year.

Why should any State Unions should bother with an ARU competition when the ARU doesn't bother guaranteeing the State Unions or their Franchises.

RUPA looks like it's the only federal Rugby Administrative body with balls

Now we've had confirmation that there will only be 4 Australian Super Rugby teams from next year is it worth looking at running the NRC over a longer period of time from 2018? (i.e. both during and after the Super Rugby season).

It would allow the best current club players to play a higher standard of rugby for a full season and give super rugby contracted players, who are usually outside the 23, more quality game time during the Super Rugby season as well as after it. It would also allow the cut Super Rugby side to continue to exist in a way that may save some fans and participants from abandoning the game.

With just 4 teams there won't be as many regular Super Rugby players also involved in the NRC, so it'd be easier for those players to filter into the 8 NRC teams mid-way through the season (after Super Rugby is finished) without it being too disruptive.

Importantly it would help to develop a plan B for if and when Super Rugby falls apart.

In the Annual report the ARU reveal overall TV viewers for the NRC increased by 25% on a per game basis from 2015 and overall delivered a financial surplus

There are some very interesting numbers in those NRC figures. Total viewership grew 65% for an average of 23% per game. Would be fantastic if they could repeat that again this season.

Another figure which makes a lot of sense considering the general consensus regarding the NRC last season was its best edition yet was the increase of average 'ball in play' time jumping from 35 mins in 2015 to 50 mins in 2016. That's huge.

Tries per game jumped .5% as well which shows the improved defence considering the amount of Rugby actually played increased by 43% (I may have rounded that up a little).

Wow, jumping from 35 to 50 minutes ball in play is insane! How did that happen? Seems a little unbelievable to be honest.

What's interesting is that I actually remember Andrew Swain and Cam Shepard mentioning a conversation they had with Simon Cron while commentating a Rays game last season. According to that conversation Cron had mentioned that the average distance covered by players in Super Rugby was around 10km a game while the average in the NRC was around 14km. Which kind of correlates with the 40+% increase with ball in play.

I don't find it hard to believe that the ball in play time is higher in the NRC than Super Rugby, just that it increased 40% on the NRC in 2015, which was played under pretty much the same laws.

Teams appeared to be much better prepared last season. That might have something to do with it. I don't know. It certainly looked like there was greater intent to play with ball in hand last season with team tending to run it from deep more often where traditionally you see them kicking for touch. That would have also helped.

That's pretty amazing stuff and augers well for the future, considering the intent now within Australian rugby to play a more improvised, off-loading game, rather than just set phases.

Looking forward to the NRC already, if we're still in it of course.

As much as I despise the decision to cut a Super Rugby team, I don't think retaining an NRC in the city of the team which is cut is the right decision.. A Perth or
Melbourne team can't compete without the support of a Super Rugby team, be it players, coaching, resources or logistical support.

And as we witnessed with the original ARC, having a team of transplanted players isn't the solution, it's a financial burden, and the funding IMO would be better invested in other areas of the state rather then having a team of FIFO players.

I agree that they shouldn't be FIFO but NSW teams have shown to some extent they can be successful without Super Rugby support. They will have to draw on the local comp players but surely the ARU could keep the pathway open by assisting with coaching, resources and logistics?
