I've said this before but we need a captain who is a forward, or at worst a 9, who can talk the talk with the ref.

In our dreadful game against Scotland last year their scrumhalf delayed the put in to the scrum. Euan Murray didn't play at THP that day; so we had scrum dominance which the scrummie wanted to counter by delay. We Aussies recognised the ploy because we had watched Gregan play for the Wallabies so often.

An astute captain would have been right up the referees date on the matter but Rocky didn't say boo. I don't think that Genia would have said anything either. Like it or not, but the Smits, the McCaws, the POCs and even the Dusautoirs of the rugby world add value to their team because they speak out judiciously. Referees are human.

When you go through the certainties for the Wallabies and think who would be best, there ain't a lot of options, but when you go around the list for the 2nd time you see two names and they are Sharpe and Pocock.

Too early to consider Pocock? Maybe, but if you know his history in Zimbabwe he was a man before his time.

So let's say Sharpe first as a bridge to Pocock in 2012.
Excellent points, Lee.
Waugh "captains" well in this way, being vocal enough but also respectful enough with refs to not piss them off. Eales was always polite, but once he grew into the captaincy was very forward about getting in the ref's ear. Gregan went a little over the mark at times.
I am not suggesting Waugh be the Wallaby skipper by the way, but he does that aspect of the job just how it should be done, I reckon.

If your talking about players getting into the ref's ears the first name that pops into my head is Matt Giteau. I can picture him screaming at the ref for a penalty.

The captain has to be someone with intelligence that can answer an interviewer’s questions with an analytical disposition and not just talk in clichés. He must be also be gentlemanly mannered and forthright. This was George Gregans greatest attribute I reckon, his rugby ability started to decline towards the end but he was always well spoken.

Screaming is exactly wrong and double that if Kaplan is refereeing. Smit doesn't scream; ostensibly he discusses though in reality he is negotiating for the next deal in 2 minutes time.

He's a very impressive captain. I wish our captain, whoever he is, had his skill.

interesting Robbie Deans comments:

In Perth to promote the upcoming Cook Cup clash with England at Subiaco Oval, Deans pondered possible replacements for current skipper Rocky Elsom - and named Will Genia first in a group including Nathan Sharpe, Pocock and Phil Waugh.

"The great thing is we have other players who are displaying leadership and who provide us with choice," he said of the captaincy.

I assume he was just answering a question, but why ponder it?

Genia has got more vocal as the season has progressed. At first I was worried that he didn't say a thing to the referee, but he is getting better at it. Not that he is ready for the Wallabies job. That is at least another year away.

Will Genia [yes, terrible pun] be captain of the Reds when Horwill returns?

Not sure Biffo. Will be interesting to see.

Interesting indeed. My ears may have deceived me but, a few weeks ago in one of those match-day chats, I could swear I heard McKenzie say "we are missing our captain James Horwill".

well at least there would never be a mic put up to our team huddle.

while we are making those types of guesses, how about Daniel Halangahu?

Impossible, are you mad?

Elsom is going to get it, can't see any other option.

I've got to agree about Waugh and Sharpe being the best candidates for captaincy in terms of experience and dealing with the ref with the right balance of forthrightness and politeness. Waugh is unlikely to be a starter for the Wallabies, so that would rule him out. If there was to be a change I'd go for Sharpe. The only downside might be his off field credentials (such as dropping the f bomb in TV interviews).

Gregan always got up my nose, so the refs must have hated him.

Eales was a one in a million captain and player - there is no point in comparing others to him as they are but mere mortals.

Waugh is far from a certain starter and Sharpe is unknown in how long he will last before suffering another injury as his body has let him down in recent years. I mean no disrespect to them as they both have been great stalwarts of the game.

My concern is whether Rocky can turn his aggression on and off at will every time he needs to approach the Ref. We certainly don't need a consistantly mellowed out Rocky on the paddock.

We all know that Genia and Pocock are very mature young men but what we have to seperate them is the last 10 weeks to indicate that the burdon of captaincy has not impeded Genia's game.

Genia for captain and Pocock for vice captain. Make the move now and let them settle into their role so come RWC time they are solid in the job. Both of these players command huge amounts of respect from their peers and would also command it from the officials.

Personally I think Rocky will be better off focusing on his own game.

Just my thoughts.

We need a number 8, so Stephen Hoiles starts and is made captain. Is great with Refs, I here.

Or we could adopt my "If in doubt, select Red" policy, which means Quade Cooper could come into the captaincy contention, and rightly so, being a Reds player.
