Riddler
Not all the numbers on the team sheets were right; so it didn't always help to have one. Rupert McGuiness was there and kept asking me the names of blokes. I think I got most of them right.
The Runners 8 was Vanderglas. He went O'K didn't he? It's a pity that he is so lightly framed. At this level he looks good but I think he'll get knocked over a lot in the Super14. The same goes for the excellent Hugh Perrett who played 6 for the JWs.
I think the Runners 18 was Liam Winton who plays lock for Penrith. It certainly wasn't the excellent Sydney Uni 2nd Grade prop Jono Owen as the team sheet said.
Yeah it was lock Sigg who came back on for the JWs but he is so mobile that he can play 6. When he came back the 18 y.o. Peterson locked with Thomson.
No Dud Roodt didn't play and wasn't even listed; so he must have been injured as Lindommer said On the other hand Tyrone Smith was listed at 12 but Parahi played there instead.
Some other stray thoughts about the players:
JWs
15 Pete Betham didn't shine as much as in the Viking Park trial. He jiggered around a lot but didn't come close to making a decent break and his passing to put a guy through was ordinary.
13. Rory Sidey. Noddy, I think, warned after the Tahs trial in Lismore that Sidey was nothing much and he looked ordinary yesterday. This was especially by contrast to his direct opponent Andrew Smith who looked a bit like Cameron Shepherd playing 13 - at that level. I have egg on my face - I thought he was a good 'un.
12. Tim Bennetts had been excellent for Eastwood last year but had no impact and seemed to telegraph everything.
10. Youngster Ben Seymour, now the Manly starting flyhalf is progressing well. He may have his name pencilled in as a squaddie to poach in the next year or so. The likes of Perth and Melbourne will know that there is not much of a pathway for him at the Tahs with 3 flyhalves already.
7. Chris Alcock, your mate, is going OK converting to a 7, but he doesn't have the instinct for it that Hooper and Colby F had (and who played left and right sides of the scrum instead of open and blind side.) He has the build for it including short legs.
3. Paddy Ryan and 1. Dan Palmer (LHP!!) went OK but I reckon they changed around a bit. Paddy was sucking in the seagulls for most of the game and Dan was a bit of a pot plant.
2. Ben Roberts the Sydney Uni prop played well enough but often threw too long to the lineout.
Runners
Have mentioned most of their guys but ....
3. Shepherson earned his pay. He was like one of those TV wrestlers throwing JWs out of the ruck all afternoon.
1. Jerry Y was the most mobile of the props on either side, as expected, but he got pinged a lot in the scrums.
2. Edmonds seemed to be thinking all the time: "WTF am I doing here when I played against the Sharks last night?"
?? Prop Jono Owen is a goer. You can see why the Brumbies took him to South Africa.
There was a nice feel good attitude towards Huxley at the ground wasn't there Riddles?
