Good back up to be had on the bench though. The front row has been performing well particularly Matu'u. Should be ok in the scrums against an 'average' rebels scrum. Will be interesting to see how Jason performs against his old club!

WFT is going on at the Canes? Is Isaia Walker-Leawere injured? Why are they persisting with journeymen plodders like Prinsep and Blackwell instead?

Peter Umaga-Jensen. FFS. The guy is getting shafted.

Rayasi not even in the squad today. Surely injured. There is no reason you would pick Julian Savea ahead of him at this stage.
LOL, 3 years later Danny Toala comes back for Moana to twist the knife.

^ 'canes website lists IW-L as a "Long Term Injured Player" which is probably code for "Won't Play This Year".

Edit: was listed as "Unavailable Due To Injury" when 'canes squad was named.

Another partial buyout (or buy-in if you want to look at it that way:

"Y11 Sport & Media, a global investment group specialising in sport, has acquired a 25% stake in the Hurricanes and Richard Mansell has secured 12.5%, the Wellington-based Super Rugby franchise announced on Wednesday.

"Mansell is the director of the Horowhenua-Kāpiti Rugby Football Union and the chief executive of Coastlands Mall."

Saw on my news feed that Brett Cameron has signed with 'canes for at least 2023. With Morgan & Love already on the books that can't be good news for Garden-Bachop.

Hurricanes trying to get Brad Shields back from France for SR2024

Had seen that WOB, had been whispers Brad was keen on coming home. With Ardie off for year in 2024, could help with experience bringing through Lakai, though there a couple of other decent 8 options already there.

Wellington RU had their AGM recently & from their balance sheet it has emerged that the Hurricanes, in which WRU have a 50% stake, lost $1.4Mn last year.

Yep mate, ties in with buying into building that new state of the art training facility in Upper Hutt. Canes put money into that.

Last year's loss was only half that for 2023 but even so 'canes will be passing the hat around the various shareholders, hoping to raise $1Mn in new capital.

Jeez... that WA money for an ANZAC Day test looks pretty good now.
Also, how do the Canes struggle financially, they would have to be the biggest ticket in town? Why don't crowds flock to see them?

Because in the stadium, you're still miles away from the action? Seems like a terrible stadium for rectangular games.

Citizens of the socialist state of New Zealand are going to have a conniption about this.

Hurricanes apparently looking at signing Japan lock Warner Dearns for a year, effectively on a sabbatical. Bit of a weird one this, especially as the Hurricanes are unlikely to be able to compete on price with Toshiba, particularly for a non-NZ qualified player.

Could be for development reasons, but if I had to guess it's a way of sidestepping the new JRLO eligibility restrictions - Warner is 9 tests away from having the 30 required for the new exception, an amount he might struggle to reach before the next season kicks off but should absolutely have by the one after.

Just to complicate it a bit further there is also talk of Harada, the Toshiba hooker doing the same at Moana, but I can't see that being for eligibility reasons (or money). Not exactly the strongest choice for development outcomes either, but it might be that the style is suited to what they want out of him.
