Waugh is the only specialist 7 in the Tahs contracted S14 player list. There is no such player in the 23 players of the professional or amateur Academy either.
Nobody picked that Beau Robinson would be discarded and not be replaced by a specialist. We all wondered who it might be but it was the wrong question. The real questions was: would they bother?
Then we heard that Coridas and Alcock were going to be two of the rookie contract players for 2010 and knew that neither was a fetcher either. That's when we realised that the answer to the 'would they bother' question was : No.
What would they have done if Alcock wasn't around to play 7 against the Cheetahs? Since Coridas seems to be on the outer they would have played Mowen there, as he has played 7 before for Randwick, and played somebody else at 8. Maybe Dennis - Jowitt is fit again and would have come into the equation somewhere - maybe at lock so Mumm could play 6.
Mind you, TPN would have put his hand up. He played in the backrow as a schools player and I think he fancies himself wearing a jersey with a higher number.
Fitzpatrick has played a bit for Eastwood there when Dunning was hooking but he mostly played 6 though wearing the 7 jersey.
As you indicated elsewhere topo - it was a gutsy call to pick Alcock for a rookie contract, especially after we both saw him not distinguishing himself for the JWs a few weeks ago, but we have to tug the forelock and say: well done.
They saw more in him than we did.
