And what punishment should Pocock receive for bringing this to light?

No one has ever suggested that Pocock should be punished have they?

I've certainly expressed disappointment at his comments to the press, but have supported him (a) reporting it to the referee and (b) lodging an official complaint.

I know that a lot of people on the internet like having good guys and bad guys and see the world in those simple terms. Unfortunately, the world is more complex than that. What a proper disciplinary/justice system needs is a fair and proper process - one that deals with the facts and even treats the bad guys fairly, as opposed to one which is conducted through the media and takes sides on the basis of the fact that one party is deemed to have greater moral authority than others.[/quote]
I think your wrong, he has a personal and vested interest that he feels strong about and the ARU had raised as well. He said it's not a witch hunt but it's a line in the sand that it's not acceptable. Something are bigger then the game.

JacPot owned up said sorry will pay a fine and hopefully become an ambassador for the cause.

Poey did the right thing, and his never been anything but honest and truthful and stands up and speaks up for what he believes in.

Of course Jackpot owned up. He was known by others to do it and he was like a deer in the headlights.

I bet he is remorseful. Simply because he got caught.

In most normal cases I would agree however the ARU has a rule which prohibits marquee players from staying any longer then 2 years.. Waratahs were planning on asking the ARU for dispensation to keep Potgeiter longer, his chances of been granted this dispensation just dropped..

A bit off topic but can you play 2 years at one franchise and then another 2 years at another aussie franchise?

You know that do you Scrubber?
Or is it just bound to be the case because he plays for the Tahs!
I guess it wouldn't matter what he said or did, you've made up your mind and that's it.

what I don't like about Pocock is he uses rugby as the platform to inflict his political views on everyone. he was doing it when he was captain which was wrong. how dare he use being captain of the wallabies to ram his political agenda down our children's throats. it would of been just as easy for him to handle the whole incident off field. You watch it wont be long and he will be running for the greens within the next couple of federal elections.

waaaat. how is objecting to homophobia a "political view"?! The idea that you are condemning pocock for taking a stand against this crap is crazy.

Pocock is clearly a man of conviction. He has strong views on environment protection and social equality. He's refused to get married because of his views on marriage equality. He does charity work for amnesty international. This is who he is. I admire him. he has the characteristics i'd like to see in a wallabies captain.

Potgieter's apology:

To all the rugby community, fans and public.
I sincerely apologise for the hurtful words spoken during the Brumbies encounter.
In the heat of the moment I regrettably uttered a word, with no intent to discriminate. I respect everyone from all walks of life and would never intentionally hurt or judge anyone, it's not in my character.
I apologise for my actions and understand the seriousness of this matter.

I am pleased to see that Potgeiter has taken responsibiliy for his actions; however I am unsure how constructive the punishment is. Will the fine go to a gay support group for example? Also perhaps Potgeiter should show that he is a better man than his words suggest by engaging with inclusive teams such as the Sydney Convicts.

I don't support sending people to work or be with persons they might have offended as a punishment.

Would those offended want him around and the big question that needs to be asked is what if he does not want to be with persons who are gay?

There are people who genuinely don't like gay people and lets face it you can't force someone to change their beliefs.

Let him pay his fine and life can go on. A forced apology helps nobody, a genuine apology may help a bit.

John Laws once said don't apologise for anything, your friends have already forgiven you and your enemies never will

Bloody hell, games flat out gone soft. Every bloke under the sun woulda been suspended for life if they cared about this stuff in my day! I remember a game against Randwick where it kicked off big time, every name under the sun. All in brawl, then full time blown and both sides went head to head in about 5 boat races. Sticks and stones you bloody gen ys!

I think it could have been handled better and quieter than running to the ref in the first instance in the middle of the game

Finish the game and over a beer highlight the issue to the guy and then if that fails, escalate.

FFS Pocock is the designated liaison dude, why not bit of liaisoning?

its worrying that there's almost as many people on this thread criticising pocock as there is criticising pots.

This issue wouldn't have got the attention it deserves if pocock had have made a complaint behind closed doors.

The matter is over and done with now. The bloke did a dumb thing and faced the music. I don't know him to be a repeat offender so his apology should be taken on his word and we all move on.

The suicide rate for gay people in this country is six times higher than the rest of the population. This stuff isn't just about being PC and not offending people. If Pocock is getting this kind of reaction from the good old boys imagine how a gay bloke in the era you describe must have felt.

I think rugby players can still play hard, rough, sledge then be friends and drink afterwards without contributing to a problem that costs lives.

I think there is a tendency in these matters to conflate the small minority that don't 100% condemn Jacpot.

The vast majority of comments on here condemn him. That's beyond argument.

Questioning Pocock's role doesn't mean you think what Jacpot did was acceptable.

I think Pocock did the right thing btw.
