Ok lads and ladies, I'm relying on your excellent rugby knowledge. We've been tracking the membership numbers of the Oz teams here but I am curious as to how these rate with other provincial teams around the world?

Do the South African teams have a membership structure? How about the French clubs etc?

What are the biggest membership clubs in world rugby?

What is the difference between being a member and the die hard fan buying a ticket and supporting his team week in week out?

Apology for asking it as membership is not something we see back in Argentina so it is still a unfamiliar subject with us.

I guess a membership is via a single payment (albeit potentially in instalments) giving you tickets to a group of games.

Like buying season tickets? Will it similar to golf clubs? Discounts and such things to other features?

Unfortunately more of the clubs rely on fund raisers and grants rather than membership for extra income. But I think it will be a great idea if they can implement such a thing. Although they do not have a lot to offer there is still things one can provide for members without spending money.

Yes, you're correct. It's really a season ticket where you pay in advance for a number of home games for the team you support, usually at some discount and some other benefits, such as some merchandise included. They used to be called season tickets in Australia, but over the last few years, the name has evolved into memberships.

The approach started in Aus with AFL clubs. The have, for a long time, termed season tickets holders "members" (but often not full voting members) you are provided a discount on the tickets and get your details sold to sponsors

Sometimes you also get a priceless* item that says "Member 2012" on it. Scarves, hats and car stickers are common ways of identifying yourself as a member.

* Actual price may be the price of membership
