Highlanders to go green?

The Highlanders are going to announce on Monday a new kit which will apparently ditch away with the blue, gold and maroon and be light green...

While it would be nice to have one less team in the competition with a blue kit, I'm quite fond of their colour scheme...

Thoughts?

The Highlanders have had many changes of jersey design since they started in 1996, but have always stuck with the basic colours of blue, gold and maroon.

Those colours are based on the playing colours of the three base provincial unions: Otago, Southland and North Otago.

But as the franchises and unions drifted apart, with Otago and the Highlanders officially splitting roles last year, the franchise is seen by many as being totally separate from the provinces.

Because it's very difficult to sell jerseys, shirts, caps, other merchandise in a colour the public doesn't want to buy. No AFL teams have green, no Major League Baseball teams, no big soccer clubs...

except for the Irish ..................... or Warringah or Nottingham

I wonder how many Boston Celtic jersey get sold each year. Or Green Bay packers.

I still can't believe that the Force went with blue, instead of yellow with black trim.

Like the Hurricanes??

It's prefrable for an Australian team to wear an alternate stip against a team from New Zealand or South Africa.

It seems like the Highlanders have made this decision completely separately from the fact that every second team in Super Rugby wants to wear Blue. It's more to do with creating a new identity separate from the clubs.

That being said it is ridiculous how many teams wear Blue. My roommate is new to Rugby (already an avid Tahs fan) and every week he has trouble knowing which teams are playing. the worst offenders are the Rebels and Stormers who are almost identical. At least the Force's blue is unique.

Unique, and fucked. They should be yellow and black, or black and yellow if you prefer, and be called the WAsps - geddit, WA like Western Australia. But no, they have to have a horrible trendy colour of blue and give themselves a stupid name. Idiots!

(Now my brain is spinning with a thousand other complaints about rugby uniforms. Time to take my meds and lie down for a bit.)

They were introduced the same season as the Cheetahs who were Orange that might have been a reason they didn't go with yellow. A very long bow to draw though.

How can a player feel love for his jumper when it changes from year to year? Bloody progress.

Is this another tradition lost which is causing you problems, Scarfy? :)

Depends on the green you choose. Lame, pastel teals are no good. Strong, Irish greens look great.

One of the weirdest phenomena in sports, to me, is just how bad most modern jersey design is. In American sports, for example, almost every great looking jersey hasn't changed for 30 years. That might be part of what makes them look great, but back in the day teams went for simpler typefaces, very basic (or no) logos and strong, bold colours.

Modern jerseys tend to suck because they constantly have to change them to boost merch sales. Also the constant development of better fabrics and ergonomic designs. Eventually you run out of good designs. The tahs floral diamond travesty is case in point. It's the only strip that can actually make sky blue intimidating.

The one that bothered me the most at the time was when the Reds started actually wearing red instead of Maroon. If I was a fan that would have been really disappointing.

Surely you know that the Fremantle Dockers have/had a bit of green on their strip, to go with the purple.....

What kind of Perth Mayor are you? :)
