Pretoria - Blue Bulls director of rugby, Heyneke Meyer, is set to become the new Springbok coach.

The Rapport newspaper has been reliably informed that Meyer and Jurie Roux, CEO of the South African Rugby Union (SARU), met in Pretoria on Saturday to finalise his contract as Bok coach.

The new Springbok coach will officially be named on Friday.

This comes after rumours surfaced last week that Peter de Villiers would be reinstated as coach on an interim basis after Meyer struggled to get a release from his contract at the Blue Bulls.

But according to Rapport, Meyer and the Blue Bulls Company were able to agree terms to release him from his position at the union.

However, some compensation will need to be paid to the Blue Bulls as some directors are still unhappy with Meyer’s departure after he was appointed less than a year ago.

Is it 4 years too late?! Probably not because he's still a good coach, but the last 4 years would not have been 'wasted' if this decision had been made 4 years earlier!

At the end of the day, any step away from PdV is a step in the right direction!

Rassie Erasmus will be part of his coaching team and we just may see FdP back in the green jersey.

Heyneke should been there when Snor was appointed. His winning Brute player cycle is gone and will have huge challenges. The politicans and other province supporters will audit every single team.

He is very strong on structure and dissipline. Weak on gameplan and out of the box thinking.

No worries Oom, I'm happy enough to hear views here on the new developments over there.

Apparently Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber will be on the coaching team - seems like good news for you okes.

I doubt Rassie Erasmus or Nienaber will be on the coaching team, however I could be wrong. Meyer is an excellent team builder over the long term, but we as South Africans may not experience results within the first 12-18 months. I'm really hoping that whoever gets the job can employ a game plan more suited to the modern game while preserving our traditional strengths such as direct forward play and pin-point kicking.

Perhaps slightly more ball-in-hand, decent backline play and accurate and calculated kicks to play in the opposition half so we can force mistakes playing our game (lineouts etc.)

According to Rugby365 this is his coaching team.

1. John McFarland: The English-born defence coach and former London Irish head coach helped Meyer and the Blue Bulls win four Currie Cup titles and become the first South African side to win three Super Rugby titles. Rated as “the best defensive coach in the world game” by his bosses in Pretoria, McFarland has spent 10 years working with the Bulls. He is set to work as a kicking coach at the Boks.
2. Jacques Nienaber:The defence coach of the Stormers, who was responsible for making the Cape franchise the best defensive unit in the 2010 and 2011 seasons, joined up with the Boks at the World Cup last year - where the Boks' defensive record was second best in the pool stages, conceding just two tries (one each against Wales and Samoa), and another in the quarterfinal loss to Australia. He will be in charge of defence.
3. Rassie Erasmus:Regarded as one of the most astute analysts of the game, Erasmus resigned from his role as 'Senior Professional Coach' at Western Province/Stormers. Although he was also linked to Nick Mallet and the England job, he has since emerged as the leading candidate to be a full-time Technical Director/analyst on Meyer's panel - similar to the role he played for both Jake White (2007) and Pieter De Villiers (2011) at the World Cup.
4. Paul Treu:He made a seamless transition from being captain of the South African Sevens team the one season and coaching them the next! After a patchy start, Treu has developed into one of the best attacking masterminds in the abbreviated version of the game - taking the BlitzBokke to the IRB World Series crown in 2008/09. He has also managed to develop and nurture players through his Sevens structures. Treu’s visionary dedication has earned him a spot as the Bok backline coach.
5. Basil Carzis:He was courted by Peter de Villiers ahead of last year's World Cup, but the fitness and conditioning expert looks set to follow Meyer to the Test arena after being part of their three successful Super Rugby campaigns and also winning four Currie Cup titles with the Bulls.

It I think is a good decision especially because the Stormers Coach pulled out. He really should have been the coach 4 years ago too. Gee they took a while to appoint one though, but it won't have any bearing I don't think.

I think I'll only believe this story once it has been officially announced by SARU on Friday. History shows that they are very capable of throwing logic out of the window and changing their decisions at the last minute!

....but very happy with the choice if it is as reported.

Pretty sure Rassie and Nienaber will be on Heynekes list. I am not sure about True and is hoping he'll bring in Slaptjips (Pieter Rossouw) but then he have to bring in coaches of colour.
