I can only think it'd be hard enough to start playing Super rugby at 19, let alone out of position but I'm not a back and I've never played rugby at that level, so what would I know?

As Matthew Burke so sagely reminds us, Jnor, we're not really entitled to an opinion.

I missed that Burke comment, but would like to ask....what the?

Looking through the listed teams on the tahs website for the games last weekend, there doesn't seem to be too many 13s out there who could step up. But in short, IMHO, Tim Bennetts, Anton Lavin, Brian Sefanaia and Tom Kingston would all be better options than Cross. The Quade Cooper try v Tahs was such a poor defensive read between Cross and Beale that it was embarrassing.

Worse midfield ever? I think some of you have short memories. We struggled to find a 10 for years and centres have never been a strong point. Always had great players in the back 3, but never in the inside backs.

How about 10. Tim Donnelly 12. Turinui 13. Ben Jacobs. Don't forget Sam Harris, Shaun Berne etc

Agree with all but Tim Donnelly, great player.

i wouldn't mind seeing kingston at 13, i know he's still very new but i've seen him carve up numerious backlines at 1st XIV level and club at 13

And therein lies the arrogance of their set up. I also felt Phil Waugh's press conference was disgusting after the Reds loss. A lesson in humility wouldn't go astray

I don't think it is fair to lay Matt Burke's views at the door of the Waratahs setup. He's always been a bit of a dick. But a very good goal kicker, which is why he was employed.

I disagree. I would imagine that Tahs media approve any comments they make in newspaper columns before they go out. If that approval did happen, then the arrogance can only be viewed as that of the entire set up...............IMO. Burke was more than just an exceptional goal kicker....go back and look at the tapes of the 99 RWC to qualify that comment, he was only a split hair behind Tim Horan..................but he always had that arrogance about him. I took my then 7 year old son to a Wallaby fan day in 2000 at Joeys. My son really idolised Burke and a group of us Dads approached him and asked if he could take a few of those boys for some kicking practice. Burke's reply.....'only if you get your cheque book out'. So he was told to shove it. And the silly thing is, there was some VERY wealthy Dads amongst that group, who would've got their cheque books out if he'd just said yes.

:nta: do you really think the Tahs have the manpower to approve every article?

Perhaps I should highlight how many of these pieces are written, journo calls << insert name here >> , they talk for 10 minutes, journo writes piece. << insert name here >> receives cheque.

You may disagree, but you're wrong. The Waratahs management was as discomfited by Burke's remarks as everyone else was. And your subsequent example perfectly supports my case, which is that Burke has always been a dick.

Still, I won't hesitate to use Burke's article as evidence that the Waratahs are an elitist, self-serving and deluded organisation, who believe success is somehow owed to them.

It adds to the Theatre of it all, you know ;)

Although I hate Tom Carter with a special passion I only reserve for people like mick ennis, the english and a certain former prime minister, I thought he played really well on the weekend for nsw, and was close to being best of ground.

Careful Bowside, you appear to be being seduced by the Darkside. You need to stop watching his play now. Immediately. Before you are seduced into believing the drivel that people like me keep talking on this site.

The problem with the NSW back-line is that apart from Beale and Mitchell, it has absolutely zero x-factor in it. Turner has gas to burn but he can't score a try - unless the line is wide open, there's less than 20m to get to it, there's no defense to beat and the ball has been strapped to his hands/chest like a Taliban suicide vest. I haven't seen Cross break the line in any of the games I've seen, Carter bends it but usually not enough to create something for the guys around him and Halagahu has been less than average. Carter is a rock defensively but the rest of the line has the propensity be taken apart by a decent back-line - see Blues/Crusaders.

Any team lining up against the Tahs knows exactly what they are gonna get with them and can confidsently build a defensive pattern to accomodate. That's why I would have had Beale at 10 from the start of the season - give him the ball as much as possible to create.

And do they have any backline moves at all??

I think they have been trying to add attacking options, but injuries have screwed it up so far.

Barnes is a good organizer with the ability to put runners into space

Horne has that ex-factor as well, and they brought another "stepper" in Bracken-Henry - but they have been wounded.

Agree with all but Tim Donnelly, great player.

Timmy was certainly a great little club footballer. Plus, he led the Waratahs to a win against the Crusaders in ChCh, and scored a meat pie in the process.

Not too many NSW fly halves can say that.

He had limitations, but he was a good defender, had a good passing game, and could kick well out of hand and for goal. And he had a heart as big as himself.

Would it be possible to get a montage of fatprop's various avatars and post them on the blog? In an earlier age such an assemblage could have been used to terrify kids who'd been naughty, but it would probably get you reported to DOCS these days.
