R and M is a shits n giggles column, but he's also been tasked with being the herald "chief rugby correspondant", in which capacity he might have shown some of this rugby nous you claim he possesses. I have never seen him do anything more than summarise events. Certainly nothing bordering on "analysis", as I understand the meaning of the term.

Cos he was writing for a broad audience, all SMh readers, not for the 1% of the population that watch the game.

Please name any journalist, writer or commentator that is not disliked by a substantial number of people on this site, not the majority, but a sizeable number of people.

Gordan Bray, Bhudda, Kearnsey, Kafer. . . it doesn't matter who you name there will be those who like and those who don't.

Shit I've even read people who really like Greg Martin on this forum!

Grumbles was nowhere near the best, but he was far from the worst.

He wrote about our game, for better or worse, and he will not be replaced at the SMH so we will be the poorer for it.

Besides, who will we complain about now?

I have been reading rugby journalism for more years than I care to count. Growfat is easily the worst "rugby journalist" that I have ever read. The. Worst.

Who is, or was, a worse rugby journalist, in your valued opinion?

OK, WJ - let me hear you defend Satan..come on

I would put it to you that since grumbles wrote mostly opinion pieces and is easily more discussed than any othe Jurno by a lot that he in fact is the greatest rugby Jurno Australia has had. If you agree with what he wrote or not is beside the point to the fact he has created more discussion on the code than any other person out there.

Grumbles' career is testament to the dearth of interest in our game: if enough people had complained about the stodge he trotted out SMH might have got rid of him. But not enough people care.
His command of the language was below that of an average 12 year old and he did not understand grammar.
When you combine the absence of those, one might have thought, essential qualities of a writer with his lack of knowledge of the game you finish up with unreadable, unfathomable rubbish.

Yet you read every column.

OK Waylon - Knock out two stories of 1000 words a day on Australian rugby that keeps people informed on what's going on. Make them so non-rugby nuts will read them as well.

Make sure you have the latest player news in there, and what's happened at every boring arsed presser and captains run. Try and interpret what the hell Robbie Deans is saying. Don't slag off players, coaches and the ARU or they won't talk to you, but try and keep it balanced.

Oh and be sure to make it interesting and entertaining, but don't include any anonymous gossip because the guys on the GAGR forum will bitch about it endlessly, but still read it nonetheless.

Look forward to seeing how long you keep it up
