Looks like another year without a Colts comp - there were attempts to get one together but too few clubs registered interest. (That's third hand info, so please correct me if its wrong).

1st & 2nd Grades have the following teams for 2014:

  • Nerang Bulls
  • Surfers Dolphins
  • Bond Uni Pirates
  • Gold Coast Eagles
  • Palm Beach Currumbin Alleygators
  • Coomera Crushers
  • Griffith Knights
  • Tweed Barbarians
  • Helensvale Hogs
No word yet on 3rd grade.

I'll try and keep this thread updated throughout the season.

Good to see Gold Coast Rugby focussing on 1st and 2nds. I remember it was a ludicrous state a few years ago when I was playing when there would be only 7 first grade teams yet over 10 4th grade teams and clubs like Surfers having multiple 4th grade teams.

Yeah, 4th grade didn't exist last year and 3rd grade was a bit hit and miss.

It sounds like (based on what the club president has been saying) that the District is getting quite strict about what teams you need to have to be a participant in their comp.

The noise they're making is that Colts will come back eventually.

Good luck to Helensvale taking on Logan in their annual inter club fixture playing all age groups from U6 through to first grade. Held at Helensvale on 8th March I know Logan are very keen to take both Saintly Hogs cups back. Should be a good day of rugby for all

Played a Helensvale Hogs junior side when my junior team toured QLD and holly shit they were one of the biggest/hardest sides I have ever played....best of luck to them - always been a fan since then!

When you get the times, how about a little more info on where the game is and other details. Never been to one of these games before but was thinking of going along to watch Griffith v BaBars as I think that's not too far from me. (Assuming Giffith = Knights and their home ground is at the TAFE?)

For reference, left column is at home - so I'll check the address but that should be the right ground for Griffith Knights.

Speaking to Col from Pirates recently the club has decided at this stage they won't be having a 3rds. Definitely for the best because probably since they started the Friday night 3rds comp a few years ago, it's been a struggle to fill the 3 grades. Better to focus on the 2 anyway.

Also I've heard Stu, who has coached since 2011 has gone to Tweed and Lincoln Matehere has taken over. Speaking to the boys that he worked with last year, he seemed quite switched on tactically so hopefully an improvement is on the horizon after quite a few lean years.

The GCDRU site still hasn't been updated with times yet, but these are the kick-off times I have

3:20PM Bond Pirates v Eagles @ Pizzey Park
3:20PM Alleygators v Crushers @ Bienvenue Dr
3:20PM Griffith Knights v Tweed Barbarians @ Heeb St
4:00PM Nerang Bulls v Surfers Dolphins @ Glennon Park

Only 3rd grade games are
Nerang Bulls v Surfers Dolphins, and
Alleygators v Celtics

Results I have:

  1. Alleygators 3rds went down to the Celtics
  2. Coomera forfeited and didn't turn up - 2nds and 1sts both
  3. 1sts beat 2nds in a spectactular exhibition game.
Some Celtics guy was mouthing off saying that the 3rds were loaded with higher grade players - I can assure you that despite a lot of begging none of us in 2nds or 1sts were allowed any game time - the outcome is good evidence of that.

Anyone else got results from the weekend? I doubt we'll see the District post any.

They're redone the whole draw. Although, at least there are times for the games now.

The draw has been redone - instead of 2 rounds we're now playing 2&1/2 rounds (some teams will get an easy run to the finals depending on who they play in those 3 games)
