Global Rapid Rugby

I'm guessing they would be targeting the foreign players in the Japanese league, otherwise there'll be slim pickings prior to the RWC.

Memory loss here, what season is Japan suspending or shortening due to the World Cup? I have a feeling the 18/19 season is meant to be over really early to allow extra time for the Sunwolves (Japanese National side to prepare.)

Yeah, the 18/19 season is really the 18 season; the troops will be home by Christmas.

Leaves the field vacant for Rapid Rugby. ;)

the 7 'meaningless' games this year.

An ignorant comment which shows absolutely no appreciation of the impact of the axing of the Western Force in 2017 had on players, fans and the game in WA.

These 7 games:
  • Enable a professional team to be recreated from the decimation which followed the axing.
  • Proved what could be created in quick-time - rather than the slow-moving train wreck of any RA initiative.
  • Provided a focus for Rugby Fans in WA to watch live games in Perth
  • Enabled many bugs to be worked out for GRR in 2019
  • Acted as a showcase of game-day entertainment which averaged more supporters per game than any Super Rugby franchise
  • Provided excellent promotional material for advertising the benefit of GRR'
  • Raised the interest of PI teams so long forgotten by the Rugby Wolrd.
  • Grabbed the attention of the target audience in the Indo/Pacific/Asia region.
  • Provided a platform for FTA and streamed rugby as well as Cable TV.
  • Enabled the rebuilding of rugby in a State on which the National body, Rugby Australia, had turned it's back and continues to ignore. So much for maintaining a pathway for players in WA. Tee RA pathway can only lead top players across the Nullabor and does nothing to build the game in the West.
  • Provided the ability to have top players playing in local club rugby and to promote the game down to Rugby Roos level.
  • Provided the impetus to recreate the Western Force Academy where budding young talent is paid to experience a professional rugby program not offered by any other State including training with the senior squad on a full time basis.
  • Provided entertaining rugby even when the WF lost.
  • Enabled the retention of a competitive team in the NRC
Yeah - totally meaningless.......
Some people obviously have nothing to give away - yet present themselves as supporters of the game in ALL of its forms.

Are the teams that aren’t already formed eg teams bar Japanese teams and force already assembled and training? What sort of lead in will they have?

The twitter streaming of the games was also excellent quality- many viewers commented on being able to watch while offshore.
And as far as releasing details, if RA hadn’t been doing its utmost all year to sabotage at every stage the team announcements and full marketing programme would be in full swing months ago. However there’s no panic as Mindaroo will make sure it happens unlike that useless lot in RA!

Absolutely. I agree with all that. You’ve jumped off the edge quickly. I only meant they were ‘meaningless’ in that they were 7 unrelated games. No trophies etc. effectively a series of friendlies so throwing the ball around to be part of a spectacle was fine. There was nothing to lose.

is it the Drua or a different entity entering GRR?

Or are the players going to be pretty much the same so it doesn't really matter?

I reckon the FRU (and it is they who will own the team) would be best keeping one of their existing names; Drua or Warriors.

Probably the Drua because the Warriors are their 2nd national rep side - not a pro side (or semi-pro side) as such.

The Fijians, like Australia, don't have a lot to gain by having a multitude of team identities for fun … or because they can. This just dilutes the marketing. Better to have one name in the public eye for the whole season, every season.

I think the Rapid Rugby team for Fiji will be bolstered by a few more-established names and be, in theory, stronger than the NRC side. But only slightly - you'd have to think the Drua would be the basis of the squad.
