The story of George Smith has stalled in Toulon. Arrived this summer in the Var, Australian flanker will, according to La Provence, commit at the end of the season with Top 14 club Sanyo Wild Knights. The champions of Japan in 2008 he proposed a three-year contract and an annual salary of 800 000 €.

Apologies for the poor grammar, it was an article in French.

800k euros a year! He would be mad not to take it.

My schoolboy French (it was a long time ago) suggests that this is only a proposal by Sanyo Wild Knights, at this stage? I guess more will be revealed in due course.

I've watched a few Toulon games lately. George gets plenty of bench time (so do their other 'name' players) but when he's on the park he's still dynamite.

I did a google translate, and this was the bolded bit:

According to La Provence, Toulon flanker George Smith has accepted the proposal of the Japanese club Sanyo Wild Knights.

But it is google translate and my schoolboy french is quite poor and forgotten. It may well only be a proposal?

Looked at the 'aurait accepté' and 'lui ont proposé' and didn't think that was quite 'il a accepté' (he has accepted) and the other is like 'suggesting' I think.

Anyhow, could be I guess and probably wouldn't be such a huge surprise. It certainly would have been a strong option before he initially signed for Toulon.

"Aurait accepte" roughly translates to "has accepted". "Lui ont propose" translates roughly to "made him an offer". Never did schoolboy French but went out with a French chick for three years (given we are quoting our qualifications). I may run this past my mates kid at the T20 Big Bash tonight. He is only seven but is bi-lingual due to a French mother and should sadly be able to correct us all.

I did say it was a long time ago. Yeah, its apparently Eddie Jones' team - Suntory Sungoliath - although an official announcement hasn't been made yet.

"aurait accepte" translates to could have accepted. its conditional past. So they've made the offer, but as yet unsure if he has definitely taken it. He'd be stupid not to though.

Don't look at me what would I know, 3 years here and still no clue on the lingo.

Wiki has George down for the Sanyo Wild Knights (with our good friend Sam Norton Wild Knight) but no more explanation as to how, when and why.
