Force vs Reds - S15 Round 12 - 4 May 2013

Quick go only so rough cut thoughts for current and future competitive conditions:

- need a real attacking, fast 15 with Mogg-like attributes esp long kicks fm hand, big gap here in Reds attack

- need a faster and far better attacking and ball handling 13.and sadly S Finger looks past his best and has become reckless re penalties as well

- need Taps in way better form, and Shipps seems more and more hesitant, declining in confidence and form

- need a second 'when needed' kicker that can complement and/or replace QC (Quade Cooper) at times as QC (Quade Cooper) has always been a somewhat erratic kicker, great one week, can miss clutches the next

- need to drop the indulgent notion that we're some kind of special family that must preserve players who were great.two years ago.and ruthlessly upgrade our obvious attacking weak spots, S15 top level conditions have changed dramatically since 2011

- need to stabilize coaching situation; I can't help but believe the whole handover model and players and coaches leaving etc isn't having some impact on team stability and focus

It was interesting to see A. Finger go into 1st receiver a fair bit tonight when Cooper was stuck at the bottom of a ruck or was recovering into the line. He was doing it in multiple phases too. The thing that got me is that it wasn't Taps organising the backline attack in those situations.

Probably the worst game of rugby to watch this season. Off sides and ruck infringements dominated, much like the first game game brums v reds. Ref was diabolical. A team like the reds will never win a game were players slow the play deliberately. That will be the plan from every reds opponent from here on in, and since the brumbies game. At least the Blues did it with guts, flare, skill and mostly legally. Tonight was an aberation. Reds will have to brace themselves and try to overcome. The run to the finals and the trip to SA will be a true test of the Reds organisation in terms of planning and strategy, and the players intestinal fortitude and desire. They have done it before and it will be a pleasure to watch their endeavours from here on in. Some hard thinking to done, are they up to it? Only time will tell.

Reds and Wallabies and Reds captain James Horwill has been issued with an off-field yellow card for contravening Law 10.4 (b) Stamping or Trampling during a Super Rugby match at the weekend.

Horwill made contact with Western Force player Pek Cowan at a breakdown with his feet. The incident occurred in the 3rd minute of the match between the Western Force and Reds played at NIB Stadium in Perth on Saturday 4th May.

An Off-Field Yellow Card may be issued by the SANZAR Citing Commissioner for foul play incidents that are very close to, but in his opinion do not meet the Red Card threshold for Citings.

In this case the referee for the match did not act upon the incident.
Upon further review of the match footage the Citing Commissioner deemed an Off-Field Yellow Card was appropriate.

2 Tough call, but not new and I think he rocks myself, not everyone in the backs has to be quicksilver, some of them have to shut stuff down or you just leak points

Toothless tiger. They should enact the penalty the next time the two teams meet. At least it would be some type of meaningful punishment.

Now that's just rude. The Force simply do not have the cattle that the othe Oz teams have. They've played some really entertaining rugby this season, despite the fact that they've been on the road more often than not so far this year. Kudos to them for their guts and determination.

the force have played some great rugby this year especially and on the whole ive been very entertained and very impressed by their performances this year

this is the reason we're the most competitive conference.

the standard deviation should be a decent measure for that, and currently the AUS conference has the highest SD (~10, NZ conference 9.9, SA conference 7.6) and is therefore the least competitive, if you take that as being balanced. SA conference clearly the most balanced at the moment.

One of the keys to the reds success this year has been the work of Gill, Shatz, Quirke and SFinger at the breakdown sealing off to secure fast ball and slowing down that of the opposition (with varying degrees of legality........in the order I have listed). Fair play to them - Gill in particular has been very good.

I was interested to see how Gill went in this game against a more physical but mobile backrow, relying less on the specialist scavenger and more on throwing bodies in to secure ball and counter-ruck - perhaps the closest backrow in Australia to what the Lions will bring. I would have Hooper on the bench for his explosive running against tiring defences, but would have started Gill. After this match i am starting to think we may need Smith more than I had hoped for his greater physical presence in tight.

There are a lot of Aussie teams that think they are the ducks nuts in the conference. None have the complete game and are being exposed by teams that play a particular style of rugby. They haven't been able to adapt and counter the style of play. If you want to keep bitching about it go ahead. But realise if you don't learn from it you aren't going anywhere in the finals.

hmmmmm, maybe. But surely, quick to their own breakdown should ensure they get the adavantage. Given that defenders are ("with varying degrees of legality") countering the speed of Gill to the breakdown and spoiling with succes at this level, you would be correct. Will the interpretation be the same at test level, Who can tell.

But surely Oz rugby will be benefit from having Gill and Hooper in the Gold for the lions rather than an ageing warrior (albeit a fine and noble one) if only for the experience and hardness that will be gained from such encounters at their impressionable stage of life.

Disagree should have been penalty to Reds first priority tackler roll away which the force didn't. Yes sheehan got the ball and what he did was fair but whoever it was lying on the wrong side should have been penalized because it prevented sheehan from being cleared out easily.

Even if you're right (and we disagree), how does it end up a Reds scrum feed - the ball was out.

Stiles has done a great job but aftrr going to a couple training sessions and watching pre game warm ups Foley has all but taken over the fowards.
