From their website:

The Western Force has been forced into a major backline reshuffle with James O’Connor, Willie Ripia, Brett Sheehan and Gene Fairbanks all ruled out of the club’s match against the Hurricanes on Friday evening in Palmerston North.

O’Connor has had several niggles over the past month and after consulting with club medical staff and a specialist, Coach Richard Graham has decided to rest the youngster for a week. He will remain in Perth to be treated.

Flyhalf Willie Ripia has succumbed to a calf problem that has been plaguing him for some time while Sheehan and Fairbanks both suffered muscle strains during the club’s match against the Brumbies.

All four players will be monitored to determine their availability should any of the current touring party come under a fitness cloud ahead of the second leg of the tour against the Highlanders in Dunedin.

In some positive news, the club’s all-time leading try scorer, Cameron Shepherd, returns to action while Mitch Inman has also been included.

Up front Graham has been able to maintain the majority of his forward pack with former Hurricanes prop Tim Fairbrother coming into the squad in place of Pek Cowan who was ruled out after sustaining a broken cheekbone in last weekend’s match against the Brumbies.

The Perth side has also added further depth to the front row by drafting in exciting young loosehead prop Tetera Faulkner on a short term injury replacement deal. Faulkner recently signed a contract to join the Emirates Western Force next season and has been a standout in the NSW 1st Grade competition for Southern Districts.

Also joining the tour is Manly Marlins skipper Chris Cottee. The 29 year old has been one of the most consistent performers in the Shute Shield for a number of years and will add experience at scrumhalf.

“Obviously losing several quality performers in the backline, in particularly from halfback, isn’t ideal but you play the hand you’re dealt and we’ll continue to prepare well for a big game against the Hurricanes on Friday night,” Graham said.

“Nothing changes in terms of our expectations, we go into this game with the intent to perform to our best and get a positive result.”

Can Shepherd play 10? Sheehan, Shepherd, Smith, Inman, Sidey, Cummins, Dellitt would make a hefty back line in terms of size. Creativity might be lacking though

I was going to say that Sheehan could play 10 as he did regularly for the Rats when Holmes and he were in the same team, but then noticed that he wasn't in the squad.

Well done to Cottee, one of the best club scrummies in Sydney and a leader, but one I thought would never get a Super gig at his age. Stannard is likely the back up flyhalf; so the ginger nut has a double chance to get a Super cap. Faulkner may not get a run with 4 props touring, but it will be a great experience for him if he does.

Geez, that Force team looks very skinny on game breakers and ball players without JOC (James O'Connor), who ticks both boxes. But they have surprised us before and the Canes are the Canes; so you never know.

We are going to get absolutely belted. Might as well play 10 man footy, as there really isn't a lot on offer past the 5/8 anyway.

jeez that is a shocking list of injuries. good luck making a team from what's left!

This doesn't look like it's going to end well for the force, but at the same time they will go in with nothing to lose. It will be interesting to see Stanard and Swanepoel at 9/10, they are both decent players. I agree with above though, 10 man rugby could be the way to go looking at the line ups.

The weather in Palmerston North looks like it'll be wet and the temp about 11C. Usual Kiwi conditions at this time of year. So ten man rugby will probably be the go.

The Canes name their team today but it looks like a backline of Weepu, Cruden, Nonu, Conrad Smith, Gear, Andre Taylor and Jane. The enforced break for some of these guys would have done them the world of good.

I think the wet conditions will play to the Force strength (their forwards) to some extent but I can't see them overcoming a Hurricanes side desperate for a strong finish to their season.

Good purchase for the Force, solid prop

Hurricanes named:

Cory Jane, Andre Taylor, Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Hosea Gear, Aaron Cruden, Chris Eaton, Victor Vito (captain), Jack Lam, Faifili Levave, James Broadhurst, Jeremy Thrush, Neemia Tialata, Dane Coles, John Schwalger. Reserves: Andrew Hore, Jacob Ellison, Bryn Evans, Mark Reddish, Piri Weepu, Jayden Hayward, Julian Savea.

Weepu on the bench - mustn't be 100% yet?

Chris Cottee is an excellent addition. Very strong for a scrummie. I believe he still holds the record in the Riverview gym for leg press.

Im suprised they arent taking Jono Jenkins. Is he injured? He has been a great find for them this year...

Richard Brown is back, so they have the 4 good backrowers they need. If any of them get injured though, i assume he will fly over.

Jeez losing their 3 fly halfs in one go. If they have Inman, Sidey, Shepherd, Smith and Dellit in the same backline that is a lot of size. Without O'Connor i can see one tactic here, CRASH BALL!

Ah shitttt, no JOC (James O'Connor), ripia or Fairbanks. I don't have a good feeling about this game and think it could potentially be a blow out unless the pack rinse the canes.

What happened to the Matt Brandon experiment surely they could fly him over for the tour.

On second thoughts, 6.Brown 7.Hodgson 8. McCalman, 12. Pocock in his schoolboy position at Churchie, absolute monster in the making :)

Where are you Stefano?
