The Mayor of Perth

Wykes really should have got that try, I guess u cant blame the video ref too much as he had no angles to work him, inconclusive footage really. I blame the ref, I think it would have been a different story had he used the words "Is there any reason not to give the try" instead of "can u tell me if its a try or no try"...he really didnt use his words wisely.

Precisely. Gets back to ref inconsistency (Kaplan thread), they should be asking the same questions for the same situations. The Schwalger try was awarded because of the question asked of the TMO by Jonker, when there was no video evidence.

Ref: Is there any reason not to give the try?

TMO: He didn't ground the ball.

Same result.

Exactly. What I thought was odd, however, is that one view clearly looked doubtful re grounding, one looked like it may well have touched the ground, albeit briefly. Why is the benefit of the doubt seemingly in advantage of the defending team? In any other era, that's a try, and nobody would have thought for a nanosecond that it was not.
Maybe they should standardise the guidelines for the TMO - if they go upstairs, it is simply "Try, no try", rather than some other convoluted dribble some of the refs seem to use.
