After the rally on Sunday there appears to be growing support for a breakaway-league which would have the support of Andrew Forrest and a growing number of others. It's also telling that Kerry Stokes has already stood up to be counted. Quite like the idea of a new group of Rugby Union teams from Australia and elsewhere on free-to-air TV. With the growing anger about how this has been handled by the ARU Board and the impact on the game this is starting to feel like World Series Cricket all over again. There is no doubt that Rugby Union in Australia needs a shake up and the ARU is proving itself incapable of running a BBQ pack raffle.

Good old double talk from the ARU again...

Just lie upon ridiculous lie.

So, Patsy spoke to the RWA board on Sunday, saying a bucketload of cash was all that was required to keep the Force in the comp.

Less than 48 hours later, $50m is not enough.

Didn't like the conditions, whatever they may be? Thought you'd be gifted it, to spend at your leisure on yachts and such?

Patsy and the rest of your rabble, just fuck off, please.

Get Andrew Forrest, Kerry Stokes, Peter Holmes à Court, The Murdochs, James Packer, Nick Fordham and John Murray to flesh something out. :p

On a side note, I wonder if the Western Sydney franchise idea is still floating about? I wonder if this is the reason for the belligerence regarding WA? That eventually the ARU are going to be putting all their eggs in the Western Sydney basket soon?

Posted this on where to with super rugby thread - but Alisports press release about their $100m investment in chinese rugby also stated plans to start a new competition with foreign players in 2018, so in many ways the stars could be aligning for the Force to play in this competition. Doesn't hurt that your main backer and supporter has deep business connections in china as well.

Be nice if does get up it is put on FTA.....in many ways doing the SA thing of having teams in two professional comps could be good result.

What gets me is how far away from the ethos of rugby the ARU has become. Strip rugby down to its nuts and bolts and what the game is about and what the rugby community is about.

  • Whether you go to watch your kids juniors game each week
  • Coach that junior side or assist the coach (wash jersey's etc)
  • Go to training twice a week and have a drink in the clubhouse with your team mates after training
  • Give up half your weekend to play and support the other grades on game day.
  • The working bees to keep the clubhouse running
  • Preparing for home games
  • that interaction with the other clubs in the rugby community on game day after you have played.
  • When somebody in the rugby community faces hardship and everybody is there to offer support.
  • THAT OVERALL FEELING OF BEING PART OF SOMTHING THAT IS GREATER THAN YOURSELF.

The ARU have strayed so far away from that. Its a disgrace and they are beyond repair. Burn it down and rebuild. Rugby will live on.

The disconnect is disgraceful, spot on.

The $50-m proposal did not go to the board, nor even to the constituent unions, so whom are the ARU acting for?

The executive tells us that a few million a year - $6m - is enough for the grassroots. What would $50m in a lump sum, invested wisely right this minute, provide?

I'm looking forward to seeing Patsy answering to the Senate.

was that what was going to happen? At upfront payment of $50M?

Yeah, don't think there's been any claim at source for $50m in a single suitcase.

It was "tens of millions", most likely split over several years, and when coupled with a guarantee to fully underwrite the Force over the timeframe it came up to the $50m ballpark.

Having said that, it is still a shitload of money for Clyne to dismiss out of hand. Especially in light of recent reports.

Maybe the offer was too high. Let's not forget that Australian Rugby's idea of a good deal is paying someone millions to take a team off their hands and writing-off north of $13m in debt on top of that to smooth the way.

If RugbyWA had offered Clyne a $1 deal instead, he might've taken it.

At what price would Clyne say yes...every man or ARU would surely have their price and not as if Tf could not buy out the ARU a 1000 times over

He could not. He's wealthy for sure but to purchase the ARU, if it were possible, in it's entirety would cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Unlikely. Profit is what - $10 million at most. Growth limited so assuming P/E ratio of 10. $100 million would be a very good value for the ARU at the moment.

Twiggy got about $200 million dividend earlier in the year and $260 million in October.

I am sure he could easily buy the ARU or completely build a new league from his income this year.

Revenue will be way down this year due to falling crowds, and given the parlous state of Super Rugby, the projections for the next few years beyond the current broadcast agreement can't be that good either.

He might even be able to knock them down lower.
