On Monday 5 September make sure you're at Sydney Square, Town Hall, at 12.30pm to farewell the 30 Wallabies charged with the responsibility of claiming Australia's third Rugby World Cup title. After the formalities to open proceedings, the Wallabies World Cup squad will be presented to the crowd before signing autographs and taking photos with fans.

In 2011 Australians from all walks of life have thrown their support behind One Team - the Wallabies. Be part of the crowd on Monday to wish them well and show your support for One Team in 2011. If you can't make it to Sydney then tune in to Fox Sports, Channel 513 as they broadcast the official farewell live.

I went down to this for a while. They introduced all the Wallabies and then we heard some stupid speeches from Mark Arbib and Barrry O'Farrell before Nick McCardle interviewed Deans and Big Kev.

I didn't bother hanging around to queue for autographs.

O'Farrell's speech was a shocker. It was full of backhanded compliments along the lines of the Wallabies being disappointing in recent years but are now coming good and that whatever sport you normally support you should get behind the Wallabies.

Did he really think that people who don't follow rugby union were likely to turn up? What a clown.

P.S. All the Wallabies turned up this time.

Sounds like BOF made a clown of himself - maintaining the fine record of NSW politics!!
Did Mark Latham crash the event? ;)

For the sake of not hurting the Qantas brand, all references to the Rugby World Cup, shall be referred to as either:
- "The event across the dutch"
- "The 4 year September tournament"
- "The tournament"

I'll wait till the quarter-finals before I farewell them.

haha.......but surely not jay...we want them to get them to the finals so we can pummell them (and beat france and eng and sth afr on the way)

then at least we can have something to deflect the choker jibes for another 4 yrs....

Also it annoyed me when BOF talked about hopefully welcoming back the Wallabies in 6 weeks time.

Could someone please look at a calendar and work out that if the Wallabies win the RWC, they wouldn't be flying home before Monday 24 October which is exactly 8 weeks away.

Every person who mentioned a time frame at the John Eales Medal Night got it wrong too. They all either said 6 or 7 weeks. Great idea to suggest welcoming the side back around quarter final or semi final time...

I'd say what I fully think about Barry's remarks but I'd get banned for life. To put it as lightly as I can he's a douche.

Speech from John O'Neill on behalf of ARU and interviews with Deans and Big Kev would have been sufficient. No need for the pollies to speak at all. It would have also given more time for the fans to meet the team as there were some people turned away from the "meet and greet" queues.

There is every reason for a Polly to be there and it's good publicity, Julia should have been the key though, your trying to sell one team to common folk nit rugby fans you need to reach higher than BOF.

If it had been the AFL World Cup she would have broken a leg to be there, even if Tony would not give her a pair for the occasion. Bloody Mexicans!

And in the spirit of even handed political comment, you don't need to reach very high to get higher than BOF, as posters earlier have attested.

I didn't say pollies shouldn't be there...just that they didn't need to make a speech.

So picture this. After arriving on a 14 hr flight from LA, exhausted and trying to keep myself awake the entire day, I walked from the Opera House to Sydney Uni and back. I walked into a rebel sport, bought a supporters scarf, and happened to walk by town hall only to stumble upon this event. I had no camera, and just missed the queue for autographs. I did manage to talk to Robbie briefly and wish him good luck. For a Wallabies fan all the way from Toronto, just happening on all that was pretty surreal.

Also, I know it was a weekday and all so people are working and what not but if the send offs each country give are anything to go by then the Springboks would belt us by 100.
