Wing for me, for the Reds and Wallabies

If we are lucky for the Wallabies we could end up with

15 Shepherd
14 Hynes
13 AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)
12 Gits
11 Digby
10 Barnes
9 Genia
Well, punch on Senor Biffo.
Let's see...
Shepherd - will break
AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) - will have to play 15 'cos Shepherd broke, and JO'C is too much hair product
Gits - will chuck some sort of wobbly at the thought of being 12, not 10
Barnes - might break
You get my drift.
Sorry with all the negative waves, man, but in the words of Darryl Kerrigan, tell 'im he's dreamin'.

Before you get whacked by FP, read his effing post again - see what I have bolded.

If you can't understand "if we are lucky", FP will deal with you. My services would not be required.

Horne? On what? Some potential? A few games of being not crocked? Remember when he wasn't crocked last year? He was in pretty bad form, from memory.

Let him show something first, for a season or two.

Sorry, didn't realise it was so serious for you. In my lucky dream , Larkham comes back to international standard, Timmy Horan is resurrected from retirement...well you see where I'm going.
My point is that that backline is about as likely to happen as mine.

Largely based on potential, but if he is the No.1 choice for the Tahs, and I have nominated AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) as fullback and Digby at wing, and I don't rate Cross as highly, then it's not that fanciful.

I didn't consider the 'crock' factor as Sheperd was in the other list.

I did not opine on the likelihood of the members of that, or any other hypothetical, backline being still standing by the end of February, let alone at the end of May. I merely agreed with FP that it would be a very good backline if all the members were fit and sound at one time. The probability of that? Let's just say very remote.

A lot of people see Diggers as a winger but for some reason I see him just at OC for the Reds & maybe the Wallabies.

We will have to wait & see what the season brings, from all reports Fainga'a has been playing really well at 12 so it comes down to the Pieman on where Diggers fits in.

I guess my problem with Horne is that he showed a huge amount of potential (especially for a guy with a slight-ish frame) two years ago, before doing his hammy. Then last year (2009) he looked to have a case of the second year yips, before again succumbing to injury. It's so often that you see a young player who has made all the youth rep sides get a change and make a cracking job of it the first year before an average second year, after which the potential fades to being a solid provincial player (who is a fringe test player and gets an odd game). I'd rather not heap praise or pressure on his shoulders - he's still a young kid who needs more time prove himself. I doubt he's ready for the Wallabies this year, or next.

Worrying though, it's been Horne's hammy twice. Caleb Brown was another who showed huge promise before succumbing to multiple hammy issues across two seasons, and then never made a real come back after being rushed back by Eddie Jones (and I don't count being signed by the Force on the proviso he doesn't get injured - then doing his hammy within a few weeks again as a come back).

I hope this is Ant Fainga'a's year: he has it all beore hime. At worst he should be on the bench as deputy 10/12.

On Barnes at 10: this has been my hobby horse since the last RWC but old Lee forgets things sometimes (said he talking in 3rd person - De Gaulle eat your heart out, but you're dead and at the minute I am alive) but one criticism I had on him as a 10 was his propensity to play too deep. When Cooper got the 10 jersey for the Reds he showed us what playing flat to the tackle line was all about. More correctly, he had shown most of you blokes, as I had seen him as a schoolboy.

If his receiver had aimed himself at a gap that 2nd guy could get the 3rd guy through because although the tackler could tackle the 2nd guy it was with arms and 2nd guy could give a golden ball.

Old Lee will go to Canberra on Thursday and that will be one of the things to check on my list. These include:

- 13 Carter: reading of play on defence now that front on tackling is less significant because of other defensive imperatives.

- 12 Beale: did he really defend better in the RSA on defence at the end of the 2009 S14 - or was it wishful thinking?

- 10 Barnes: is he standing and passing flat?

This is the Ioane thread? Excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me.

If anyone disagrees with you, can I be second in line to punch their lights out? :)

Third - dream wallaby backline.

Having not really seen Shepherd play since he broke his leg against France in 08 I don't know if I could pick him at 15 for the Wallabies. But as this is a thread about Diggers I would like to see him start on the wing for the Reds with a roving commission with Morgs at 13 but if Morgs decides that he doesn't want to defend, like he did for the first half of the 08 S14, then move Diggers in to 13.

I don't know where Diggers could fit in. Mitchell is an on and off player far to include. Maybe he could go on the wing, because I'm a fan of Mortlock and I know that if he wants to continue with the Wallabies he will be outstanding, Hynes could be playing at Fullback if Mortlock leaves, and Ashley-Cooper gone. Hynes' performance the other day was fantastic.

well who are going to be the starting players for each state first.

firstly out centre:

Force - Cross
Brumbies - Mortlock (until injured then AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)?)
Tahs - Horne? Possibly Carter?
Reds - Diggers or Morgan T.

Of those, unless Horne puts in a stellar year injury free, Morty and Diggers would be the leading Wallaby candidates. And given the uncertainty around Morty's future, perhaps Diggers is the man?

Why is Morgan T dismissed so readily? He is only 26 or 27, has played for the Wallabies, and is looking fitter than he ever has before.

He's a joke, the Matt Dunning of backs. Fat, soft, talks a big game but disappears when the heat is on.

The Pieman would be great for an Aussie A side along with Waugh to captain the new breed of potential Wallabies.
