At least we'll have one Saffer in the final. Got the reward he so much deserved.

Craig Joubert of South Africa has been appointed to referee next Sunday's World Cup Final between France and New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland. He is the second South African referee to referee a World Cup Final.

South Africa has been involved in five Rugby World Cup. The Springboks played in two Finals and South Africans refereed the other three.

In 1999 and 2003 the referee in the Final was André Watson and now in 2011 it is Craig Joubert.

Joubert will be joined by Rugby World Cup 2007 Final referee Alain Rolland and Nigel Owens as assistant referees and Guilio De Santis as television match official. Rolland, who refereed the 2007 Final, is the reserve referee.

The IRB also appointed referees to the third-place play-off on Friday. Wayne Barnes will referee the match with Romain Poite and George Clancy as his assistants and Shaun Veldsman as the television match official.

The appointments were made by the IRB's Match Official Selection Committee in Auckland on Monday following a thorough review of performances during the knock-out phase.

Joubert said: “It is an enormous honour to get the Final and I would like to thank Paddy and the Committee for giving me the opportunity. The whole team has performed superbly, assisted each other and bonded over the course of the last six weeks and I would like to thank them for their support and best wishes. I am now really looking forward to getting out there and enjoying the occasion.”

IRB referee manager Paddy O'Brien said: “The IRB Match Official Selection Committee was delighted with Craig and Alain’s performances in the semi-finals. Alain will perform the reserve referee role should he be required. On behalf of the Committee and all of the team I would like to congratulate Craig, Wayne and all the guys on their selection, which is entirely on merit.”

“We may be nearing the conclusion of what has been a truly superb Rugby World Cup, but our focus remains firmly on consistency, penalising the clear and the obvious and tackling the ‘big five’ areas.”

“Collectively we continue to work together as a unit and maintain a zero tolerance attitude towards infringements and foul play across the key areas of the Game. In that regard, I would also like to thank the coaches for their buy-in to the process during this Tournament.”

IRB Match Official Selection Committee Chairman David Pickering said: “It was a very tough selection process. The overall standard in performance by the match official team has been superb and I would like to thank the panel for their dedication, teamwork and professionalism over the past four years, not just the six weeks of the tournament. They can be proud of playing their full part in contributing to what has been an exceptional Rugby World Cup.”

I am quite happy with Joubert. He had a very good game IMO and confirmed that he is one of the best. Also Rolland also had a good game IMO. I would have been happy to have either had Oz made the final.

On a side note the only press release I ever want to see from Obrien is one containing his resignation.

Barnes had some poor performances in the pool games which hurt him (who says there is no accountability) and Kaplan has not been in the top tier in the last couple of years.

Good choice.

Barnes will probably be in contention next world cup knockout games, he has quite a few WC's left in him. Kaplan might have been considered for the semi's and final but it's hard to ignore Joubert in his current form. He seems on the ball and least likely to make a big mistake under pressure right now.

I'm not 100% happy with Joubert.

He's no where near the order of Bryce or Kaplan, but I do have a problem with his consistency. One minute it's a "roll away black" warning EVERY SINGLE FUCKING RUCK, the next it's a penalty as soon as your knee just touches the ground, or if you're deemed to roll the ball "maliciously".

Yes, I'm bitter - but that's the truth.

And no, I don't blame our loss on him

TBH, Barnes is one of the few I am happy with.

And Vinny Munro - maybe because his name is Vinny.

PS - I find it intriguing why Saffas are quite so proud and one-eyed about their refs. They'll even defend Kaplan FFS! (no offence Paarl, boet)

Well he was consistent in not seeing Aussies hands in the rucks/scrums, so that was good of him.

It appeared he was concentrating on pocock more than Mccaw. No surprise after the press and watsons comments during the week.

That is a load of fecking nonsense and you know it. To claim Rolland is complete and utter bollocks as a ref and made the wrong decision is fine to claim he is biased is fucking libelous. The hate campaign being stoked against the man is a disgrace to rugby and rapidly becoming a disgrace to Wales; for the record, he did not cause wales to miss 5 kicks on saturday, you had ample opportunities to win the game and you didn't take them. Sam Warburton has taken his punishment, 3 weeks on top of the red card which was upheld by the citing commision, like the man he is, maybe it is time for the Welsh to stop whinging and follow his lead before you start losing the goodwill your conduct at the RWC has fostered.

Dew Dew paddy. calm down mun don't take it so personal, As I've said in another thread the red card has been put to bed by most, It was tongue in cheek, Rolland is a good ref sometimes.:lmao:[BOOK][/BOOK]

I have yet to see one SAFFA on this board do so. Most would agree he is WAY past his glory days.

So being proud about the achievement of one ref is one-eyed? Right then.

Barnes was never going to get the final if NZ were in it.

I get what you say about consistency but he is more consistent than most.

Anyone who defends Kaplan is out of line though. Should not be reffing tests.

Joubert has been excellent this world cup, I'm glad he got the final. I haven't had a chance to put myself through the semi again, but on balance he seemed to have a decent match. Though some of those scrum calls were mystifying.

Yup, it was always coming. I thought he definitely watched (and reffed) Pocock more than any other player, but I would've been shocked if he didn't.

For the record, I thought Joubert was good.

I don't rate Kaplan either, just surprised. I do rate him over Bryce though.

I think you might find Joubert has French origins, but a fair while back.
