Work on defence?

Nah, let's box.......

Boxing could be part of Quade Cooper's next contract deal with ARU

WALLABIES five-eighth Quade Cooper is poised to follow his stablemate Sonny Bill Williams into the boxing ring.

It is understood Cooper's manager, Khoder Nasser, has sought to include a stint in Japan and a boxing match in January as part of the negotiations with the ARU for a top-up to his three-year Super Rugby deal with Queensland Reds.

Nasser also manages Williams, who is set to leave New Zealand at the end of the season to play for Japanese club Panasonic Wild Knights, before returning to the NRL next year, reputedly with Sydney Roosters.
A superb athlete, Williams has been allowed to pursue a career as a heavyweight boxer while playing rugby in New Zealand.

A source told The Australian that the ARU would not agree to a sabbatical in Japan for Cooper, but would probably let him box in January.

It is understood the ARU has made Cooper a good offer for his top-up, but it may not be as lucrative as the deal he struck last year.

When Cooper negotiated a one-year deal _ believed to have made him the highest-paid player in the country _ with the ARU and the Reds he was on top of his game. He also had strong interest from NRL clubs at the time.

There was a belief in Australian rugby that the Wallabies could not win the World Cup in New Zealand last year without Cooper, whose playmaking skills helped the Reds to their maiden Super Rugby title.

But Cooper was disappointing at the World Cup, particularly in the Wallabies' semi-final loss to the All Blacks in Auckland. The fact the New Zealand rugby public had labelled Cooper "Public Enemy No 1" after his run-ins with All Blacks captain Richie McCaw did not help his cause.

Cooper looked like he was about to recapture his best form when he sustained a serious knee injury in the World Cup bronze-medal game against Wales in Auckland, which sidelined him for the first 12 rounds of the Super Rugby season.

While Cooper played in the Reds' last five regular-season games, he was not regarded as fit enough to play for the Wallabies in the June Tests against Scotland and Wales.

Cooper is expected to be named in the Wallabies' 30-man squad for the Rugby Championship, but he is no certainty to start against the All Blacks in the opening Test in Sydney on August 18.

It's all part of the Khoder Nasser/Anthony Mundine relationship.

Cooper fights as an undercard on a Mundine fight and has a big enough public persona that people are interested. Get him to fight a 45 year old bouncer who is overweight, unfit, and has some sort of chronic injury preventing him from actually fighting properly and voila! Cooper wins his first 'professional' boxing fight.

It's using boxing purely an entertainment vehicle rather than a sport to make some money.

What a crock of shit, his ex could beat him. He will not earn a cracker out of boxing. I don't understand why his management float these ridiculous scenario's in the press.

Really? You think he is doing this for free?

I have absolutely no issue with QC (Quade Cooper) having a box or two in-between seasons. If nothing else, it will potentially harden him up to being hit, which may improve his defence mind-set come rugby time.

He'd still lose.

(sorry couldn't resist)

I have no issue with him boxing either. I just can't believe they can find someone who
a) can't hurt him, and
b)can be promoted as a serious opponent for QC (Quade Cooper).

Just when i was starting to think he was breaking free of some of the Nasser influence by signing for 3 years.

Boxing couldn't hurt too much could it?

a) is easy. You just pay someone enough.

b) is irrelevant. It's not about the opponent. It's just about Quade Cooper.

The opponent will be completely unknown before the fight and just as unknown after the fight*

* unless you happen to be a regular at the pub they're a bouncer at.

Sounds like a stupid plan to me. At 92kg he's in the super heavyweight class and I think anyone they find would be willing to sort him out.

I don't understand why it's up to the ARU to decide whether Cooper can box in the off-season? He's signed with the Reds who then release him for international duties?

Don't get why anyone is against it, he'll raise good money for charity and he'll make some extra coin himself. Cooper vs McCaw?

I think QC (Quade Cooper) and Khoda would make a crap load of money just by auctioning the opportunity to hit QC (Quade Cooper).

Can you imagine the number of people willing to pay money to punch Cooper in the face and not get charged for assault?

Hell you may even get the population of NZ to find a really good boxer in QCs weight division and then contribute $1NZ each. All of a sudden Cooper has another $1M in his pocket for a few bruises and maybe a cut eye.

Having said that Cooper has some good help available to him. The rehab S&C coach (Ollie Richardson) at the Reds has had a lot of experience in MMA and helped prepare guys for UFC when he was located in the UK.
