Boxing could be part of Quade Cooper's next contract deal with ARU

WALLABIES five-eighth Quade Cooper is poised to follow his stablemate Sonny Bill Williams into the boxing ring.
It is understood Cooper's manager, Khoder Nasser, has sought to include a stint in Japan and a boxing match in January as part of the negotiations with the ARU for a top-up to his three-year Super Rugby deal with Queensland Reds.
Nasser also manages Williams, who is set to leave New Zealand at the end of the season to play for Japanese club Panasonic Wild Knights, before returning to the NRL next year, reputedly with Sydney Roosters.
A superb athlete, Williams has been allowed to pursue a career as a heavyweight boxer while playing rugby in New Zealand.
A source told The Australian that the ARU would not agree to a sabbatical in Japan for Cooper, but would probably let him box in January.
It is understood the ARU has made Cooper a good offer for his top-up, but it may not be as lucrative as the deal he struck last year.
When Cooper negotiated a one-year deal _ believed to have made him the highest-paid player in the country _ with the ARU and the Reds he was on top of his game. He also had strong interest from NRL clubs at the time.
There was a belief in Australian rugby that the Wallabies could not win the World Cup in New Zealand last year without Cooper, whose playmaking skills helped the Reds to their maiden Super Rugby title.
But Cooper was disappointing at the World Cup, particularly in the Wallabies' semi-final loss to the All Blacks in Auckland. The fact the New Zealand rugby public had labelled Cooper "Public Enemy No 1" after his run-ins with All Blacks captain Richie McCaw did not help his cause.
Cooper looked like he was about to recapture his best form when he sustained a serious knee injury in the World Cup bronze-medal game against Wales in Auckland, which sidelined him for the first 12 rounds of the Super Rugby season.
While Cooper played in the Reds' last five regular-season games, he was not regarded as fit enough to play for the Wallabies in the June Tests against Scotland and Wales.
Cooper is expected to be named in the Wallabies' 30-man squad for the Rugby Championship, but he is no certainty to start against the All Blacks in the opening Test in Sydney on August 18.
