I agree with Tranquility.
To those critics of Davies playing style, put your vinegar back on the shelf. At least wait until after the game.
He has only played a part game, against the Highlanders, and whilst not a stand out, he didn't do anything wrong either.
The Chiefs have a lot of pace in their backs, and I suspect that Link wants to adequately match that pace, both in attack and defense.
Hopefully it will be the cracker of a game, and...........

COM'N THE REDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Davies just needs the confidence to back his pace. A couple of times last year he seemed to doubt himself a bit instead of just putting the foot to the floor.

He gets quite a few intercepts - and to me that means he reads and understands the game pretty well to get himself in that position.

I don't care if he runs in to touch when near the side line, because he generally gets an extra 10 - 20m further to the opposition try line in doing so which is equivalent to a reasonable in game grubber for touch.

*edit* and he is enjoyable to watch in full flight. That is important to me as a spectator and fan.

TNW and Tameifuna to start for Chiefs.
Chiefs team announced to play the Reds

✩: 08 April 2013

The Chiefs have announced their team to play the Reds in their afternoon Investec Super Rugby encounter at Waikato Stadium on Saturday at 4.30pm.

Chiefs’ coach Dave Rennie is enthusiastic about the afternoon fixture. “It will be great to be playing with a bit of sun on our backs and ideal for families. The early kick off time makes it a fantastic opportunity to bring the kids along.”

Rennie has made several changes to his side. Ben Tameifuna starts at prop with Michael Fitzgerald retaining his position at lock while Craig Clarke edges closer to a return. The loose forward trio of Sam Cane, Tanerau Latimer and Liam Messam start, with Messam captaining the side from the No 8 position.

Tim Nanai-Williams returns from injury to start on the wing. Fritz Lee moves to the bench and he is joined by prop Michael Kainga who gets a chance to play his first Investec Super Rugby match off the bench.

“The Reds are a high quality side that has got some world class players. I have been impressed by what I saw of them against the Highlanders.

“We got toweled up against them last year so it is going to be a hell of a challenge,” said coach Rennie.....

jeez they have a good backline. So happy we have Ant to counter Kahui.

What is the happenings with Elliot? I thought because of the whole hawks bay thing there is a bit of an issue with him playing? or....

Chiefs have a good set of loosies too, with some depth there. And a pretty damn handy bench.

If you have to choose a place to take it to the Chiefs, it would have to be their tight five.

I loved the phrases quoted by Cully in yesterday's interview with Link wherein the latter said something like:

'I see rugby games like chess....I like to get oppositions to play what they haven't practiced.'

Similar to a phrase he's used before:

'We like to get oppositions to play the way they don't want to play.'

Highlighted Link's great strength in originating game plans that do exactly as he stated above - a classic was the way the Reds played the Hurricanes at home a few weeks back and won, contrasted with the Tahs' approach away when, yes, the Tahs implemented Cheika's 'new style' of Tahs play, but there seemed to be an absence of a Tahs' game plan uniquely tailored to undermine the 'Canes best habits and preferred mode of play.

Link's comments reminded me just how much he'll be missed at the Reds, and equally just how these wonderful 'chess-like' rugby game planning skills will be required today vs the Chiefs; indeed, we'll only win if Link's innovative talents are at or near their peak, ditto the team's.

TKB is a big loss for them as he does a lot of little stuff in defence that disrupt opposition halfbacks, like timing his run to attack the base, pulling an arm when the ball is out. He's a scrapper. Pulu has a sweet pass but doesn't necessarily bring those other 1%ers.

TNW back to the wing which is his best position in my view.

Lets hope Richard Graham is furiously taking notes & learning on the job from a master tactician. He'll need to be if he's going to prove perceptions of him wrong next year.
I don't think the Chiefs or playing in Hamilton are daunting for the Reds any longer, they can ring their cowbells & rev their chainsaw's to their hearts content. The Reds will dismiss it all & win by 6.

Reds to sneak it on the back of relative set piece dominance and Genia completely outclassing his opposite. 27-24 Reds.

Even the back row battle alone is mouth-watering.

In fairness to Chieka when making that comparison he is still getting his new side to adapt to their new style and before they play his style with an instinct, they are not in a position to advance to that next level. A bit unjust to make the comparison when contextually both side are at a different level in that Chieka is in the first year and probably has more of a battle than Link did at his first year at the Reds. Mooney left him with some pretty positive stuff to work with but chieka inherited a total shit sandwich (no offence meant to the Tahs or their fans).

I think Link is just saying with that approach is that his methods run more in conjuction with a traditional Australian (Wallaby Level) rugby ontology. He has the Reds doing the intelligent stuff that made very successful Wallaby sides of the past.

This is where Robbie Deans has fallen off the rails in recent years. He hasn't been able to morph his own rugby ontology with that of Australian rugby.

Link is a very smart tactical operator as well as a very smart HR operator. He has taken the Reds strengths and integrated them into his own rugby philosophy whilst himself evolving as a coach.

This is exactly what the little Japanese HB was doing for the Highlanders last night. Very talented player.

He may be talented but I thought his game control was really poor, that's probably a reflection across the whole highlanders current style though.....

2 minutes into the game, Reds looking all the money. Sloppy defence by the cheifs let Horwill make a huge run only to be held up over the line.
Coopers looking very good creating two opportunities at the line but being held out both times.
A Finger was in space with a massive 2 on 1 overlap but a shocking pass to Davies sabotaged the try.
Davies made a good break through the defence moments later.

4 minutes into the game, Chiefs fly half Cruden created alot of space on the wing off the back of a scrum and they made an 80m dash for the line only for it to be lost and genia cleared it.
