I thought Beale looked very much like a Wallaby fullback, but it's difficult to assess positional play on TV. What were your thoughts on Beale's positioning?

his defence is improving tenfold, but positions himself like a centre in the attacking line. if someone makes a break we are screwed

His defence was shit twice, but he makes up for it with attack.

Tahs were flaky and lucky that the Chiefs were super-shit-tastic

Seeing as Barnes and Gitts haven't been terrific this year (though they have been on the rise lately) I think Robby D should experiment with Beale at 15 and A.Fainga'a at 12.

I mean Robby loves his two play makers, for good reason, and this combination would allow for that.

Just a thought.

All this talk of Beale at fullback is starting to annoy me. JOC (James O'Connor) has deserved it far more than Beale's recent form.

Now I never said Beale deserved it more than JOC (James O'Connor). I just said it should be experimented with.

That being said JOC (James O'Connor)'s terrific early season form is firmly in the rear vision mirror and I don't think he is particularly outshining Beale lately.

Neither of them will be first choices but they deserve their chance to impress.

WHO HAS DONE HIS ARM AND IS IN DOUBT FOR THE WALLABIES ACCORDING TO HIM

Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not good news at all - the Wallabies will be fine, but the Tahs may struggle.

Enjoyed our attacking game. At least they had a crack and created a lot of chances. Mitchell has his name down for one Aussie wing spot if it was not already there, though I would go for a better kicker for a wet game. Beale looked like he was playing for Joeys again doing the stuff he did when he played fullback defensively because the Joeys forwards turned over so much ball he ran rampant, but his tackling took a backward step after earlier improvement.

Barnes looked good too because he played closer to the tackle line than I can ever remember his doing before - and not to the point, but young To'omua did the same for the Brumbies. Of a sudden the Chiefs, and the Clan in Canberra, did not drift over because the flyhalf was having a crack. That fixing of defenders had benefits when the ball was spun - as was always so, and as will always be.

Our tackling was awful though and it is just as well we were playing the Chiefs who are a sorry outfit now after starting the season so strongly. By one stat count only 75% of tackles attempted were effective.

The bright game was no response to the debacle against the Clan though. That game is there in the clay of the Waratahs players just waiting to come out again. Contending against torrid Clan counter-rucking and repeated pick and goes was not required against the Tribe but the Canes have seen the Invercargill tape and will do a bit of Clanning.

Beale had a poor defensive period against the Chiefs. I've just watched my recording; in 85 seconds of one play:

- he missed a body tackle on TNW, either trying to stop the ball being passed or trying to strip it, but got put on his bum by a terrific fend.

- like Cross against the Crusaders: he stood too far away from the ruck as defensive pillar and never laid a hand on the scrummie darting through.

- he missed a side on tackle on Willinson who scored a try.

He has tackled well enough this year to indicate that his tackling problems are not caused from a lack of ticker, and he must be getting basic coaching on the matter. So we must assume that his less frequent gaffes this year are caused by not being alert enough or not taking instruction well - all which goes to a poor attitude.

Beale will most likely get into the enlarged Wallaby squad this year but to convince Deans that he deserves to get into a match day 22 against the big boys, he will have to demonstrate that his tackling attitude has improved. Watch this space.

While it could obviously be better, his tackling is better than Coopers at the moment. Both will need to improve on their way up to world class status though.

I read recently that Lachie Turner has the best defensive record of all "outside backs" in S14 this year. Has anyone access to some details on this?

WHILE NSW Waratahs winger Lachie Turner is known for his speed and try-scoring, his defensive prowess has been largely overlooked.

Turner (six) and fellow Waratahs winger Drew Mitchell (seven) are leading the team's try-scoring this season with both crossing the white line in the 46-19 win against the Chiefs in Hamilton on Saturday night.

But Turner has emerged as the best defensive outside back in the Super 14.

"Interestingly enough, while Drew and Lachie have performed particularly well in try-scoring, the last statistics I saw had Lachie as the best defensive outside back in the competition with a completion rate of tackles of around 90 per cent, which is outstanding," Waratahs coach Chris Hickey said.

Turner will need to be on his game defensively when the Waratahs play the Hurricanes in their "quarter-final" in Sydney on Friday night. He will oppose in-form Hurricanes winger Hosea Gear, who scored three tries for the Hurricanes in their win against the Queensland Reds in Wellington on Friday night.

In fact, all seven of the Hurricanes' tries were scored by the back three, with fullback Cory Jane, right winger Tamati Ellison and replacement winger David Smith also touching down.

"Hosea Gear is a very good player," Hickey said. "We are aware of the threat he offers us.

"You are always looking at the threats in any team. Players like Ma'a Nonu, Conrad Smith if he plays, Piri Weepu and Rodney So'oialo. They've got threats around the park.

"But that back three works particularly well together. Gear got three tries, but I thought Cory Jane was instrumental in sparking a lot of the good things that happened for them."

The Waratahs' depth in the back three has been significantly weakened following the withdrawal of reserve outside back Sosene Anesi, who has been ruled out of the rest of the campaign with a shoulder injury.

"Sosene has a fractured clavicle and he is going to be out for this game and probably three or four weeks," Hickey said.

"It's really disappointing to lose Sos. He has provided a hell of a lot to us, both as a starting player and off the bench."

Hickey indicated Rory Sidey would replace Anesi.

Notwithstanding the attacking threats in the Hurricanes' backline, Waratahs second-rower Dean Mumm believes the forward pack is the "heart and soul" of the team.

"The Hurricanes are a different proposition (to the Chiefs)," Mumm said yesterday."They have more experience in some key areas in their forward pack.

"You look at significant players like (hooker) Andrew Hore and So'oialo, who are the heart and soul of their side.

"If they are in form and going forward, the team takes a lot of confidence out of them."

Mumm said the Waratahs forwards would have to "step up" in the absence of injured Wallabies loosehead prop Benn Robinson, who is expected to be replaced by Jeremy Tilse.

"Robbo carries a bit of weight in our side," Mumm said.

"He is an excellent player and his ability to control the scrum is second to none.

"You have noticed the games he hasn't played. There is a big emphasis on other members of the pack to step up."

While the Waratahs forwards improved markedly against the Chiefs following their embarrassing performance against the Highlanders the previous week, Mumm warned they would need to be even more physical against the Hurricanes.

"The key to dominance and the key to possession and therefore winning the game is to be physically strong," Mumm said.

yeah, but the stats I have, he has made 73 tackles and missed just three. Awesome stuff.

Brando V has a similar strike rate (35 and 2) but much less tackles.

Of the similar amount of tackles Mitch Inman (72 and 11) and will Chambers (82 and 9) have missed mroe tackles.

As we may have suspected, Drewie is the worst, having missed 17 tackles, yet making 65. No one else (outside back wise) has missed as many.

And this, dear reader, is why Hickey needs to be fired, regardless of how the Tahs' season ends.

Tru dat. A fucking mystery.

Lee - also noticed the missed tackles by Beale and Shmoo, especially when doing the video for the front page. However, that was with about 30 points on the board. Not sure if it's the right mindset, but I guess the girls aren't gonna put the fingernails on the line for no reason?

Dwayne Sweeney cited for tackle on Mitchell

Article Published: Sunday 9 May 2010

Chiefs winger Dwayne Sweeney has been cited for a dangerous tackle during his team's Super 14 match against the Waratahs at Waikato Stadium, in Hamilton on Saturday.

Citing Commissioner Steve Hinds cited Sweeney for an alleged dangerous tip tackle on Waratahs winger Drew Mitchell in the 19th minute of the match.

The Waratahs won the match 49-19.

Sweeney will attend a judicial hearing at 4pm on Monday, at the NZRU offices in Wellington.

The Chiefs play the Blues this weekend and both are out of contention for the play offs.

Anyone recall this happening? I can't remember this tackle at all.
