So I think today just underscored what we already knew. Barker and Knox look the two strongest sides. The jury's out on Waverley, who look a touch off the pace, though who knows what they'll be like when back closer to full strength. Cranbrook look a touch stronger than Trinity, who look a touch stronger than St Aloysius.

There's no real point saying who's "favourites" at this stage. We're a month away from the start of the competition rounds. Form can change and injuries can disrupt teams. I can't guess what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow, never mind who might win a Rugby match in five weeks.

Stannies did get up with a try on the last play of the game. But Aloys had their chances and squandered them. They were up 10-nil early and coasting it seemed. SSC had all the ball in the second half, big forward runners through the centre of the field and not much shifting in the backs, but any possession Aloys had was wasted with errant kicking, the penalties not finding touch cruelling their chances in particular. Stannies tight five were great. Aloys #3, #5 and #13 their biggest threats. If they can get their kicking right, they should threaten Pius next week.

Lower age groups were all Stannies way, but generally quite tight, other than the Aloys 15As who had a massive win, with SSC sending their Bs in that age group.

Barker 16as beat Newington 16as 13-12. Their 16as look to have a good team this year following a very close loss to riverview

I don't believe we should be writing Waverley off yet. Yes they have had 2 losses, but todays game 2 extremely lucky tries to Riverview and 2 dissalowed tries to Waverley which were tries. This wouldve made the score 26-34 (if both kicks were converted) to Waverley. That is with 6 boys out who all played 1stXV last year. They are missing their key players and still playing good. Once these boys are back theres going to be a ripple effect through the rest of the teams. Plus with the experience of these new players it gives them so much depth. Compared to Barker who's 2nds get pumped every week.

RugbyTid seems like a fair few excuses for a Waverley team that is yet to muster a win

Cranbrook win 17-5. Cranbrook would have hoped to get more out of this game then they did. A even game, despite being a man down for less then a half, they still managed to come out victorious. Standout players from Cranbrook were, (3) Ah-Colt, (4) Girle and (6) Mackenzie.

Forgot to mention, standouts from St Pats were, (7) Not to sure on the name, (10) Conti and (15) Woods

Of course, we don't know that Barker and Knox won't have injuries too, and if Barker's 2nd XV loss yesterday is anything to go by, Barker's depth may not be great this year. Really it all depends which teams take the field on any given day, so insisting that my school is going to beat your school six weeks before it happens is just a bit silly.

Barker's 2nds lost some of their year 12 about to injuries and had a few boys who normally cover key positions playing 1s yesterday. Ended up fielding a fairly inexperienced team. They just need time similar to last year

It would not surprise me at all to see them do a job on a really good team out of nowhere. I've said it a few times but they looked very simplistic v View and a team that hadn't played much together and given the injuries they hadn't. Their 2nds got the win over View 3rds which is all they can do. I would have expected View 2nds to beat them but I think it would have been a harder than what it looked when they played Barker in the 2nd & 3rds.

Well Wav's beat View 3s,
Knox just lost to Shore 10-5
Barker lost by 29 to New and Knox had about 27 point loss to Joeys.

That all means nothing as we have no idea how any of those other teams sit.

Having said that Shore are a vastly improved rugby school across the board, the 13As belted Knox with a big pack and i believe they won the majority of games overall. 16 As were close too but i think Knox got up.

Apologies for the late reply, but as a wingers specialist I find it necessary to mention the performance of the Aloys left winger. An outstanding try with a difficult finish as well as booming midfield exits and determined running of the ball. I believe he is only in year 11 and can see promising signs from the young man.

Interesting take NB, I too had the privilege to analyse this performance from the east end of St Aloysius college memorial oval, situated upon Tyneside Avenue. Furthermore, the notion that is exemplified within your response is akin to my own experience, his try was magnificent being placed in the left corner of the field, employing the use of a goosestep in order to hornswoggle opposing defenders, rendering them unable to make contact with him. Although the size disparity is apparent, this player ran much like the late Jonah Lomu, a sense of pride being amalgamated in each stud that penetrated the soft exterior of the grass as he ran the ball into the chaotic defense of St Stanislaus. Aloys will only be moving forward.

Anyone got an idea of how the 2s competition is stacking up?

Waverley college 2s should be really strong for the start of the CAS Season as the 1stxv players come back from injury over the next two weeks this should mean that two or three forwards and a centre from the 1stxv will be dropped to the 2ndxv.

I heard Will Hickey might be moving up to the 2s, Heard he is tearing it up in the 3XV. Especially against a strong Riverview 5XV

Schedule for the weekend:

Waverley v Oakhill
Barker v Pats
Knox v Auggies
Cranbrook v Kinross
Aloys v Pius
Trinity v Greg’s

Good weekend of footy to come, highlight matchups would have to be Knox v Auggies and Waverley v Oakhill. I think Auggies backline can give the Knox boys a good crack but inevitably the Knox forwards will dominate and I expect a win for them. The Waverley game should be a tight affair, Oakhill seem strong from previous results so I think they will edge Waverley who are still suffering from some injuries. As for the other games, Barker should deal with Pats, as usual I’m sure Conti and Woods will give a good fight, Cranbrook should have no troubles with Kinross. Aloys v Pius will be a close match I could see going either way, would be great to see the Aloys boys get a win, Trinity should beat Greg’s but I hear Gregs do have a reasonable team so I expect it to be a bit contested.
