I wandered up to Barker with enthusiasm to see whether the solid performances against Stannies were just a one off, or whether Barkers Rugby program was indeed on the up.
I can happily report the later, with Baker winning the 16As, 2nds & 1sts.
Oakhill struggled defensively in all three games, but I would like to mention 2 players from Oakhill's 2nd XV who were standouts, Harrison Kris (No4) and Tyler Puletua (no 6). Despite playing in a losing side and these two lads ran strong all day and really tested the Barker defensive line. No doubt they will get game time in the 1sts soon for Oakhill.
The 1st XV game was a nice sight for Barker supporters. The Forwards won their own ball and were committed at the tackle. The backs were much slicker and refined than this time last year and were scoring tries.
Oakhill were found wanting defensively and a bit of ill-discipline saw 2 of their player see yellow cards, in which time Barker piled on 3 tries.
Standouts in the forwards for Barker were Sam Chalmers (No1) who scrummaged well and proved very damaging with ball in hand. Weymouth (no 5) who was clinical in the lineouts (Barkers achilles heel in recent times) and scored a good try under the posts. Flaherty (17, 2nd row) provided a real big engine in the scum when he came on in the 2nd half and just moved rucks with his bulk. Reimer (no 8 and capt) who lead the team with pride and put in a man of the match performance with 3 tries.
In the backs Tejcek (9) and Dudley (10, combined ok, but it was the outside backs that really shone with wingers Galloway (14 & yr 10) and Bryden (11) showing plenty of toe and scoring a try each, and centres Harding and Van Woerkem straightening the attack and solid in defense.
With noted speedsters Lloyd playing the 2nd half, Barker has some depth in the backs should injuries strike.
One area that needs urgent attention is the kicking duties. Barker only converted 3 of the 8 tries they scored. Not good enough if you want to threaten the likes of Waverley and Knox.
3rd place in the CAS comp is a definite possibility.
With only the one round of CAS games, and playing Knox at Knox, Barker is going to have to play the game of their life to beat the red Hot Waverley lads at Hornsby this year.
