I watched Barker play stannies on the weekend. Geez the year 10s playing up were brilliant same to the number 9 Tom Williams (I dont think he was starting though). He was controlling the game outstandingly, delivering great passes, and went under the post with a great little skoot and dummy. Big underdog to take the 9 for barker this year.

To all the CAS rugby supporters I can give you a bit of a update on the inner workings of Barker rugby this year. Much of the comments on this blog have some basis, but unfortunately some will not come to pass.
As much as we would all love to see big Ben Fakira play rugby, it is very very unlikely.
He is injury free and if your not playing trials then you are no chance for a 1st XV spot. He has not been sighted at training and did not play against Stannies so he is unlikely.
Jordan Cameron (ex Asquith Boys), Billy Pollard (Ex St Leos) and Dane Wilson (Ex St Augs) are all year 10 lads and are only fringe candidates for the 1sts. So they will most likely play 16A's this year, although Wilson could be a back up hooker and Pollard a back up prop, if injuries strike further.

Barkers front row stocks took a hammering in pre season with Coghill (knee), ?? (back up no 2) with a hand injury and Buffa prop (age) all ruled out.

And to be competitive at 1st XV level the front row must be strong.

So some re-positioning has taken place. The candidates are focused and determined, but one must question whether the dark arts of the front row can be learned in a few short months. Only time will tell.

Barkers starting 1st XV could look like this.

Prop. Sam Chalmers (2nd Xv No 8) 2016
Hooker. Sandy Locker (2nd Xv No 2) 2016
Prop. Hugh Melchior (1st XV No 8) 2016
2nd Row. Mack Northcot (1st XV No4 )2016
2nd Row Harry Flaherty (1st XV No5) 2016
Open Flanker. Jeremy Hutton (1st XV No7 ) 2016
Blind Side Flanker. Jey Weymouth (16As) 2016
No 8. Luke Reimer (1st XV No8) 2016
Halfback David Tejcek Captain..(1st XV) 2016
5/8th Will Harding
Inside Centre. Matt Graham (16As) 2016
Outside Centre. Falito Van Woerkom (1st XV) 2016
Winger. Kyle Galloway (15As) 2016
Winger Ben Bryden (16As)2016
Fullback . Will Lloyd (1st XV)2016

Other player in the mix, given there is a lot of shuffling from 16As to the opens etc are Josh Mercissien (5/8th/Centre), Tom Williams (No9), Lachlan Dring 2nd Row, Henry Gray (no 8) Jack Dudley (5/8th), Jayden Kitchener (half,5/8th, fullback), Gus Collinson (No7), Jordan Cameron (2nd Row).

Barker rugby has had a tough 2 years, but 2017 will be one of recovery and a top 3 position is very achievable. Whether or not they can topple the like of Knox and Waverly remains to be seen, but the double V and the boys in white will not want to take Barker lightly.
These kids bleed Red, and given they get but one chance against each CAS schools this year, they will leave everything on the field. No excuses.

Barkers schedule till the school hols in June looks like this:

1st April: Oakhill H
29th April: Shore A
6th May: Aloys H
13th May: Grammar A
20th May: High H
27th May: Cranbrook A

CAS Season

3rd June: Trinity H
17th June: Aloys A.

Knox have a trial game this weekend against stannies for all age groups.
Thanks TF. I'm guessing that may mean the focus is on turning out the best possible 1st XV for a trial match and not being too fussed about how the team goes in CAS 7s. AFAIK this is first year that CAS have held a dedicated 7s tournament. Would be a shame if some schools don't get fully behind it.

Cracking write up Rod. Just a question....is James Tucker in the mix for Barkers 1st XV?

From what I hear, Knox sending their C teams to the 7's.....not sure how true that is as the teams havent been picked yet.

Lots of kids are in the mix. Other names I failed to mention were Simon Marais, Connor Bastow, both 1st XV players last year and yes James Tucker is in the mix. No 2nd XV squad has been selected as yet so the group group of players is still very large. Remember the CAS rule for an Under age player is that if you are good enough to play in the 1st XV that is fine, but if not, you play in your age group rather than the 2nds.

In that case why is Tom Lamens at Cranbrook being mentioned? He turns 19 this year. He's played down an age all the way through 13s-16s.

So have Barker done the right thing and withdrawn their overage boy?

CAS Coach

Bob McCowan (2)
Everyone should watch out for Hayden Biet, a brick wall in defence and a mongrel in attack. He weighs at 90+kg and is definitely up for selection for the CAS team. He would be a great asset to any team, currently playing in the 16s. He has a league background and has adapted his skills to union. He has already been approached by the Barker first team and several members of the coaching panel for the CAS team.

Can you confirm that he is turning 19 this year? If so, is he still playing?

My intell is that Marais may not be playing Rugby this year and Bastow wants to play social. Fakira is a definite "no"- he plans a professional basketball career....but some new faces which will put more into the mix. Still concerned about the front row although the boys Chalmers and Melchior are big blocks of lads their experience in the positions is limited.

In some Knox news, Frost has been adamant over the past week or so he is coming for Moretti.

Knox juggernaught 2017 grows stronger.
