Man on the hill

Alex Ross (28)
The referee disallowed the last goal after both assistants called it in! 12/10 final score. Having said that it was the only decision that went to Trinity all afternoon. snip

I've heard a certain Trinity run away try was called back (St Pats quick line out throw gone wrong) and ended up being a pats free kick - my 2 snouts at the ground were bamboozled (one is NSW ref) - anyone know what happened?

same goes for James Lough an old Barker boy who was poached when he was only in year 8 or 9. He should be playing somewhere in the back row for Augustines 1s this year and I heard he played nsw schoolboys last year while he was in year 11

People earlier hinted on this thread that Rugby wasn't even the most popular sport at Augustines. What I don't understand is why you would import players, at the 14's level, for a code that isn't the most popular at the school

Ditto re wrong thread, but that would seem to turn conventional wisdom on its head - to be poached from a school costing $X, having a decent rugby program and strongish academics, to one costing $0.4X, having weaker academics and a similarly decent rugby program, but in a traditionally weaker rugby competition. One suspects other factors may have been at play.

12-10.. St Pats.

The Referee disallowed the last conversion, overruling both his touch judges.
''twas the least he could do for Trinity after his performance! (I'm being nice here).

Trinity dominated territory, possession and the scoreboard for the most part even with St Pats having the bigger pack.
Only an unfortunate mishap from a kick return in the dying minutes with
St Pats scrambling better seal the deal.

Trinity's #10 and #12 combo has to get better, lack of good ball to the #12 to "run onto" was missing all game, hence why the back line was misfiring throughout.
Maybe a simple pass to a deep standing #12 or #13 to punch through the fringes would of been a better option, rather than putting on all the fancy moves that just confused everyone except the opposition. (well I suppose that's what trial games are for lol).

Trinity's forwards matched Pat's bigger pack and I was very surprised they didn't get bullied in the scrums, Trinity really need to hold that ball more securely, it kept getting ripped out or just simply dropped. And the ref didn't help matters when St Pat's forwards were blatantly slowing the play down.

An improved performance all round from last weeks game against Stannies... Well done Trinity only the roll of the dice in St Pat's favour at the death cost you the game...... (oh... and the ref lol)

Trinity's stand out players for me were:
#1- Some good powerful runs and tough scrummaging.
#8- Slippery with ball and keen on defence.

#12- Good aggressive running with some nice offloads (not always to the right player though lol). Nearly always broke the first tackle.
#15- Darting runs with good positional play..(only up to the last 2mins of the game ;P). Easily Trinity's most dangerous back.Should play halfback IMO. Got the size, the jinky steps and speed to burn off the mark.

Well that's MY opinion on the game and me first post..

Smooth..... out.

Your facts are wrong . Why put up information that you are only guessing.
James Lough left Barker because his mother moved to the Northern Beaches and St Augustines
Is just up the road. Makes for far less travel. James and Luke Lough are both full paying students
and have no intention of leaving for any other school. FACT not made up

Ok, no need to get so defensive. As somebody who follows lower age groups very loosely in CAS I managed to take notice of young James lough due to the fact that he was far more advanced in his skill sets as a rugby player over his fellow peers - across all schools. Why did I speculate? Forgive me on this one but it's not very common for people to move houses and then change schools as a consequence within the first 2 years of attending high school. Especially if you move from the north shore (where i imagine he was living before) to the northern beaches - an area that a substantial portion of barker students reside. The amount of time that would be saved on travel to barker in comparison to the time he would previously have been spending to get there sort of fades into insignificance when one considers the hassle and effort of changing schools.

This combined with the fact that he moved from a school that strictly doesn't provide sport scholarships, yet has a sound rugby program (that a bulk of money is invested into), to a school that performs at a substantially lower levels academically also sent alarm bells ringing. Finally, the last thing that lead to this 'speculation' was the fact that i heard wind of a scholarship offer from riverview which he had turned down... The validity of this information may not be 100% but you can understand my point of view now.

To answer your question as to why I'd post this, simply because I saw another post In regard to another player that had supposedly been imported by Augustine's and in response to earlier comments on this thread I was genuinely intrigued to know why Augustine's import for a code that isn't their preferred sport.

I don't know the kids personal circumstances and I don't pretend to, and I'm sorry if it offended you that I used him as an example when I wasn't 100% certain on facts, but I'd suggest to you that unless you're a relative of the child, James himself, or you have access to Augustine's accounts then you are about as informed on the matter as I am.

I'll leave this totally irrelevant tangent from this thread there. If you want to discuss the issue further or correct me on anything I've said feel free to do so, that's what these forums are for.

The commute from Manly to Barker would be a minimum of an hour & a half each way,if connections worked perfectly.
Getting there outside of the School bus service that leaves from Balgowlah or Narrabeen would be impractical on public transport.

Perhaps you should tell the family Court that.
There's a thread for this but even there most of the assertions have more basis.

At no point did anyone mention that he lived in manly. Like I said, I don't know the kids personal life I just observed that one year he was attending Barker and the next he wasn't.

Even still, the odd person will trek it from manly to Barker as a day student. They come from all over really - I remember a few day students who used to catch the train down from Gosford. Obviously that is a huge commitment that somebody wouldn't necessarily want to go through but if your already attending the school i'd imagine other circumstances must have come into the decision making process to change (not referring to scholarship offers or importing).

Standing from the other side. It was Trinity ball at the line out, After a quick throw-in, Trinity had possession and were about to counter attack.
It was then that St Pats 16th man blew his whistle for a free kick to St Pats.

I was also "bamboozled" about that call along with his other calls, well at least he was consistent.:p...

Rugby Ref

As an fyi to everyone, this season St. Pats school appointed the refs and TJs to the St.Pats vs Trinity matches (1st XV and 2nd XV) on their own - in previous seasons NSWRRA appoints refs to these matches...

Can we please take this argument to another thread?
Guys, there has been a few mentions of scholarships, recruitment from other schools etc etc that belong on another thread created a few years ago:

http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/community/threads/school-sporting-scholarships.5780/page-212

The purpose of it it to isolate the subjects indicated to one place, and to talk about the actual rugby in threads like this.

The problem is that such discussion, even one sentence in a post, can act as a virus, and decent rugby threads get diseased by shouting matches or tiresome circular discussions. Not that this has happened in this thread—yet.

A strange thing happens when people talk on the matter in the thread mentioned above: they become calmer and more reasoned.

Therefore any posts in this thread that mention scholarships, dodgy recruitment practices, and the like (even in part) will be deleted, even if they are accurate.

Thank you
LG

There was no consistency required in this decision. This was the only time in the game that a team attempted to take a quick throw with a different ball to the one that went into touch.. But I don't know what caused the short-arm kick, so I'll leave that open.
