^^ u 16 waverley missing 5/8, and two centres who are all playing 1s

Boggy afternoon at Queens Park.....

U 16 5/8 is playing #9 with 1's and both centres have started at 12 & 13 in 1's. The #9 and #13 are in year 10 this year, the #9 is playing Harold Matts in league and the other has been playing 1's basketball for a couple of years.

Waverley are up in QLD next week in preparation for start of the season.

Barker 42-0!

3rds. 12 all, Barker had a chance with a conversion after the bell but it just missed out wide.
2nds. with 5 to go, also 12 all, Oakhill bagged a converted try to grab the win, rained all game!
1sts. "as above" Oakhill didn't play badly or make any glaring mistakes, they just didn't seem to have any real sting anywhere across the park, I'm guessing they are a young team!

Snort's First Law is - don't read too much into the first trial game. But. If you were to read the tea leaves on the basis of this weekend, you might recall that Barker lost to Oakhill last year before going on to win the Associated Schools competition very easily. Now, things are never this simple, but the domination of Oakhill at the very least suggests that Barker will be very hard to beat again this year.

It would be interesting to know whether the mooted new recruit, Jones, has in fact arrived, and if so, what impact he had on Saturday.

Things coming together for Waverley nicely. Although loosing to Augustines on the weekend, they did scored 3 tries in the last couple of minutes to come away with the win.
The pack this year is very experienced and talented with most of them playing in there second year for the 1st, however the back line is inexperienced with three players I'm led to believe are still in year 10.
The team for round 1 should look something like this
1- Ben Gan- Played in the 16a last year and is one very big kid, played well on the weekend, just needs to get abit more aggressive, however has improved a lot since last time i saw him play.
2- Nicholas K- Captain
3- Matthew Hooper- Played in the second row last year for the first but seems to be have put a lot of size on in the offseason.
4- Barton Heeney- 2nd year in the first, very good player, a kind of "Hindmarsh" type player, gives everything for the whole game.
5- Patrick Kava- First time i have seen patrick play on the weekend, was in the 16a last year and played very well on the weekend
6- Lindsey stevens- Played 1st last year and is one of the most aggressive players I've seen for a while, this for most of the time is a good thing however does maybe get a few to many yellow cards.
7- Tom Oconnor- 2nd year in the first
8- Ryan powter- 2nd year in the first
9- Dion- one of three year 10s in the back line. I thought Darby Murphy would get this position but seeing Dion play on the weekend he is extremely talented and will do a great job throughout the year
10- Ben Odonell- Ben will provide the x factor for the team, and is one incredible athlete
11- Jake Spinotis- Haven't seen jake play until the weekend, is one big boy for someone in year 10.
12- Paterson- Another one of the year 10s and is brother of last year fullback will paterson. Seems to do everything right without being amazing
13- Isaac Mckay- From memory played a few games last year. He is a very quick, aggressive player and will have to step up being one of three year 12s in the back line
14- Tom Duffy- Very tall fast and strong winger who has an incredible kicking game, should do a solid job on the wing
15- Jack Basset- Played last year in the 16a and although from 1st sight may look to lightweight for rugby, he is an exceptional talent who i think will have a good year for the double V

Liam Wright, thanks for that - very informative, although I may not be the only person confused at how Waverley managed to lose and "come away with the win" in the same game. Maybe it's true what they say - you can never beat Waverley, you can only score more points than them.

I'm guessing that Patrick Kava must in some way be related to Waverley alumnus Tim Kava?

No reports from Trinity v St Stanislaus. is the result being suppressed or does no-one care?

Trinity plays St Patrick's on Friday. This was a very heated game last year (exacerbated by some pretty dismal behaviour from a group of the home school's old boys). I suspect St Pats will see this year as one when Trinity is vulnerable and will look to win back some ground lost in the last few years. Not that anyone will report on the game here.

Malaki needs shoulder surgery and is unlikely to play at all this season. And full back Barkley-Brown is suspended, suggesting that he was red-carded in Bathurst. Anyone know more?

Having travelled to Bathurst for some years now, the boy may have looked sideways at the ref to get a card! Its tough for Sydney sides out in the West!

No. Except that I hear that all three are expected back for the Oakhill game at the end of the holidays.

From a quick web search, it looks as though Rowland Kotobalavu has been given time off from school Rugby to play SG Ball for St George.

Interesting what you can find online. Here's the Barker online newsletter reporting on the Oakhill game:

"Won 43-0. The first home game and virtually a new-look 1stXV team saw Barker against a determined Oakhill opposition. The Barker pack were determined to set the tone for the game. Leon Akopian opened the scoring with a good forward display and Harry Jones converted from the sideline. The Oakhill forwards continued to try to out-muscle the Barker tight 5 but Nick Burkett scored a superb try with some good lead up work by Sean Campbell. At half time Barker took a 19-0 lead. The second half saw a more enthusiastic Oakhill side but this is when the slick Barker back line really kicked away with tries to David Smerdon (2), Cameron Dove and Harry Jones. Harry Jones scored 13 individual points for the game. A tougher game comes this way against Stannies at Bathurst prior to the tour to the Director of Rugby’s homeland, South Africa."

While Barker heads for South Africa, Cranbrook will be touring South America, playing in Argentina and Uruguay.

I see that 0ver the next few weeks St Pats Strathfield are playing Waverley, Trinity and Knox. They are trial games, but it may be possible to get some relative form there.

I guess that's right, but unless half of the Barker side is injured in South Africa, this is not looking like a close competition to me. Yes, it's early days, but Barker looks too strong for the rest of the field, with Harry Jones bolstering a side that already has a solid core from last year's premiers.

Then it looks like only Knox has the strength to challenge Waverley for second spot. After that Trinity, St Aloysius and Cranbrook will fight it out to see who comes top of the "Second Division".

Too soon? Maybe. But the ten-round CAS competition has never produced a close finish, and I can't see this being the year it happens.
