This game added to my belief that the Brumbies have the makings of a great team. The effort and results this year make me think that in 2013 and 2014 we are going to be very hard to beat.
I think so too.

Before the season started I had my doubts that they would do well this year. They had too many backs who could play in different positions and not enough blue chip specialists. They had a good back row with Mowen down there now, and a good front row, but the 2nd row were duds.

But hey, weed out the chaff and they would be decent next year and 2014 could be their time.

They had a good coach and a hard man he was, but there was only so much he could do until he got some new players on board.

I didn't write the last two sentences in any post, well, maybe hinted at them, but it was what I thought.

I've just had time to watch my recording of the game at Loftus and the Brumbies blew me away. The two early tries were brilliant but it wasn't really that which enthused me: it was the blowfly at the window pane persistence at putting Bulls players on their arses.

The Bulls guys were doing it too but they couldn't do it for as long as the Brumbies could. They looked like they were affected by the altitude. And the Brumbies bench was superior.

What was inferior with the Brumbies was their discipline in their own territory. Their fans would crow that they scored 5 tries to 2 but the Bulls supporters would say: we had to take the goals because the Brumbies were killing our ball or taking our space with off-sides.

That looked like a poor decision by the ref with the Stander try. When Steyn knocked the ball on I went to put the kettle on whilst the scrum was being set - and bloody hell, when I came back Jonkers hadn't called the knock. But that's rugby.

A wonderful finish but it isn't that which enthuses me about the 2012 Brumbies: it is the aggressive defending and counter rucking. Even at 33-13 down I think: they are having a great game.

I wrote last week that when the Brumbies played the Rebels it was a poor night for Oz rugby. Some Brumbies people objected to that and took it the wrong way. Their team had played well, especially in the 1st half, but I wasn't talking about that. I meant that it was just another game that the Oz Conference had dished up and that was inferior to what Kiwi and SAffer Conference teams were producing.

The Brumbies dished up some good stuff at Loftus - of all places. Though losing, as representatives of Oz rugby, they made it a great night for us.

At the risk of being shot down here, I did not think it was a knock on. The ball went downwards and bounced forward. That would have made it a forward pass and it should still have been blown up.
But that is just me being pedantic.

The Brumbies scrum was good, some great tries were scored out wide, but I thought after the early flurry, the Brumbies were being bossed in contact until the Bulls switched off.

Too much upright running and "forced" mauls. I thought Potgieter did a great job of rushing the one out runners from the outside with the Brumbies getting caught well behind the advantage line.

The key though is playing the whistle. Nic White just stopped. It's under 7s stuff really. I know the ref made a bad call but there is still no excuse for pulling up like that.

I agree with FP, the scoreline was probably a bit misleading. It wasn't a two-point game, more like a ten-point game. The Bulls weren't hugely troubled.

But it was still a great display by the Brumbies. It warms my heart to see a try from a backline set-play, and that was a simple move executed brilliantly.

Havent read through all the post but my two cents worth.

Plonker made a huge mistake but I I am pretty sure it would not have made any differense. Like Jake Qouted after the game, its a basic rugby lesson, play till the whistle goes.

Brumbies impressed me a lot. They have improved a lot since I last watch them playing at home against the Cheetahs. Hats of to Jake White who is a great coach.

and the Brutes is still in a good log position. The differense between them and the Stormers is that they are up and down on performances. If they get it right they will be difficult to beat. Hougaard is huge and it will be one huge mistake to bring FdP back.

As a Brumbies fan, I agree. 1. Play the whistle. 2. I think the fact the Bulls took off a lot of their star players whilst up 20 has a lot to do with Brumbies finishing within 2.

Also, can't believe no one here has wraps on Robbie Coleman's performance off the bench, did some good things and sure put a spark into the side.

Whoever mentioned Prior's knock on in goal, it was also a very brave call by the ref which ended up being a good one. Trust me, i had brumbies +10.5, so was furious at the thought of a 5m scrum... At first i thought the ref had stuffed up and i was lucky, however if you watch where prior touches the ball and where it lands, you will see that it did in fact go backwards.

Loved those first phase tries off a rock solid scrum. Isn't McCabe showing some lovely hands? Just great rugby at times by both sides. I actually thought Moore followed by Alexander were best on ground for the Brumbies.

Well done the Bulls. People forget they are rebuilding.

PS: Damn the Brumbies are fit.

I just watched the game over lunch and I was also surprised to see McCabe not only pass but pass pretty well. He has shown that there is more to his attacking game than a crash ball which makes we wonder whether he had a set of hands all along or whether Deans has been giving him the wrong instructions.

It helps that his 10 can tackle.
