Carter & Halangahu as the centres does not instil a great deal of confidence in the Tahs ability to entertain

If Beale couldn't play then 10 Hangers and 12 Barnes would have made more sense even for a trial. There's no case in the real world where Hangers will be playing 12 in the S14 with Beale, Barnes and Carter all able to play there.

Still no Caldwell, or Horne, still no reply to my calls to the Tahs about it. Still no mention about these two in the press. I wish the journos will get off their arses and give some information we are interested in instead of the standard BS fare before the season.

I bet if Wayne Smith worked for a Sydney paper he would be reporting on it.

The most significant selection was of Kane Douglas again at lock. The 20 y.o. must be playing the house down in the trials to get 3 trial starts in a row, yet he's just in the pro Academy. Meanwhile contracted S14 player, Chris Thomson, is on the bench.

The 2nd half will be a shambles for the Tahs carrying 30 players compared to a normal sized team for the Brumbies or near enough.

It will be interesting to see if NN is not the joke he was in Sydney club rugby this year. You pay money to see him run over people and he was chipping them.

LG, I recall you saying that the third and final trial games represent the coaches' run on side. Hangers at 12? No Beale and Horne? What gives?

Elsom in doubt with a hamstring injury

He looked all right forking in his Chicken Caesar at lunch today, but maybe some folks don't use their hammies too much in nice restaurants. ;)

Being Canberra, we studiously ignored the fact that the incumbent Wallaby captain was sitting at the table next to us, playing it cool by sniggering behind our menus in a school girl-like manner. I blame the missus...

With one exception it makes sense. There is no explanation for Hangers to play 12 as I mentioned above - there is no case where he would be playing 12 in the Super 14. He should be playing 10 and Barnes 12.

The other anomalies can be explained.

4. Caldwell hasn't played in any trial and therefore is obviously still not right from his illness contracted 9 months ago and from which he lost 24kgs. Playing Douglas and Jowitt in the 2nd row may be a trial to see who is going to replace Caldwell, since new guy Dud Roodt and Tahs bench player last year Chris Thomson haven't impressed in the trials to date, by all reports.

6. Mowen is coming back from an operation so will play from the bench. Meantime Mumm plays 6.

12. Beale - his assault case is due for hearing on Friday so it's understandable that he wouldn't be playing the night before in Canberra.

13. Horne - must not have recovered from his second recurrence of his hamstring strain suffered in the 2009 S14.

11. Mitchell will be 1st string but has a hamstring strain and is replaced by NN.

According to a foxsports article Beale was left out so he could concentrate on his court appearance. It's great to see Mowen being ushered back in. He was a real find last year. Horne and Caldwell are the only big worries now.

I'm jumping on the Locky McCaffrey bandwagon. My darkhorse for 2010! I'm betting he leapfrogs both Mowen and Dennis into the Tah 22. Well I guess Mowen MAY end up still starting at 6.

Anyway, there's my statement. All that only about a half of trial football. That's all I've seen of him....but I was in the media area....

By the way Bruce, any idea what team Uni will be running out against the Brumby Runners?

So why Uni rather than the Tah's Academy in the curtain raiser?

As for the main game....

Smith is an interesting choice. Very much the robust, no frills but 'safe as houses'winger. Love to see him up against Nadolo, will really test the big fella out.

As for NSW halfbacks, Burgess has the gig in the final trial but McKibben is Mr Reliable whereas Josh Holmes has the spark and X factor..at least that's what I saw in Lismore. Have to confess I like what I saw of Holmes in that game, but Mckibben is great insurance. Burgess should be looking over his shoulder.

Despite being a Red's tragic I have to say that the potential frontline teams for both the Ponies and the Tah's fill me with some envy.

I look forward to game reports.

Assault hearing keeps Beale out of Waratahs squad to face Brumbies
February 3, 2010

WARATAHS back Kurtley Beale has been omitted from a 30-man NSW squad for their final trial match, against the Brumbies, to allow him to prepare for the resumption of his assault hearing on Friday.

Beale, 21, whose previous court hearing was adjourned at Mt Druitt Local Court on January 13, has been charged with one count of common assault over an incident alleged to have occurred at Tregear in western Sydney in the early hours of July 18 last year.

Because of the timing of the case, selectors decided yesterday to leave him out of the last of NSW's three trials, at Viking Park, Tuggeranong, near Canberra, tomorrow night.

"Kurtley has some issues that he is dealing with this week. We felt that it was more appropriate that he focuses his attention on that court case and deal with that before we worry about any rugby," Waratahs coach Chris Hickey said yesterday.

The NSW side includes a new midfield combination of Berrick Barnes at five-eighth and Daniel Halangahu at inside-centre. But they will switch roles during the game.

''We have some real strong options around 10 and 12, so we feel it is important to take the opportunity to look at them," Hickey said. "That [selection] is only at set pieces. Once the game starts to evolve, you will find 10 and 12 often interchange.

"That is the number they will have on their back, but after that it tends to change around anyhow."

Barnes excelled at five-eighth in NSW's trial against the Fiji Warriors at Orange last Saturday, but Hickey said he was still considering him as an inside-centre.

"Absolutely. He has played Test football at 12, so he is definitely a 12 option for us," Hickey said.

"It is one of those things where you look at different combinations of players.

''Hopefully after this game we will have a clear picture of what our best combination is moving into that first Super 14 game [against the Reds on Saturday week]."

Wallabies returning to the Waratahs tomorrow night for the first time this season in the starting side are loose-head prop Benn Robinson, Dean Mumm, who will start at No.6 but get some game time in the second row later when the two starting second-rowers, Cam Jowitt and Kane Douglas, are switched, and winger Lachie Turner.

Also returning to the Waratahs is back-rower Ben Mowen, who will come off the bench to play his first match in almost six months after recovering from knee surgery.

Wallabies back Drew Mitchell will not play, as he is still recovering from a hamstring injury which ruled him out of the clash against the Fiji Warriors. But Mitchell is expected to be fit for the opening round of the Super 14 next week.

Among the backs kept in the starting side after raising Hickey's interest against Fiji are winger Nemani Nadolo, outside-centre Tom Carter, and fullback Sosene Anesi.

Hickey said Nadolo was "quite impressive", while Anesi "did really good things for us" at fullback.

He said Carter "had a strong game. It will be interesting to see if he can repeat that performance against better opposition."

hmmm. I hope Fatcat doesn't hurt Sheperdson too much. Are the Tah locks noted scrummagers?

Not noted for anything.

Jowitt is virtually unknown in Oz.

Douglas is a 20 y.o. lock who showed up in Sydney a couple of years ago from the Northern Rivers region, roomed at his brother's house (brother was playing for the Sharks league team) so he joined the nearest rugby club, Southern Districts.

He did so well he got into the professional Tahs Academy in 2009 at 19. Saw him in a trial last year and the pace of the game was too much for him IMO. Since there he has had a full year of physical training, been away with the Oz U/20 team and got a 2nd year in the pro Academy for 2010.

As I said above they must be taking a long look at him in light of Caldwell's continued absence, because this will be his 3rd trial in a row as a starting player. If he can play out of his skin against the Brumbies his contract may have to be upgraded.

I look forward to watching him tomorrow night to see what progress he has made - as I saw little of him for Southern Districts during the year.

Did anybody else??

I am sure Foley will be working hard with them to ensure they know their roles.

The forward pack for the second half will be just as solid.

(Kepu, Fitzpatrick, Palmer, Roodt, Thompson, Dennis, Mowen & McCaffrey )

Injury news:

Pat McCabe (quad) along with Andrew Smith and Rocky Elsom (hamstring) are ruled out of tomorrow nights game with Mitchell Chapman to replace Elsom with Franky Fainifo and Alfi Mafi to be elevated to the 1st XV.

That's bad news. McCabe always seems to get an injury when a chance comes up.

I think that Friend was wanting to have a look at McCabe and Smith to see how they went respectively on either wing.

Frankie and Alfi will make the team stronger. Looking forward to seeing Frankie play.

Disappointing that Rocky can't play but Force fans will be hoping that his injury lingers for another week.

Am I going blind? Who's the openside cover for the Tahs? I did have some far-fetched hope that Chris Alcock might have got a gig but failing that thought that Coridas might have been mentioned. Is McCaffrey the great hope to cover 7/8 and then Mowen to cover 6/8?
