Assault hearing keeps Beale out of Waratahs squad to face Brumbies
February 3, 2010
WARATAHS back Kurtley Beale has been omitted from a 30-man NSW squad for their final trial match, against the Brumbies, to allow him to prepare for the resumption of his assault hearing on Friday.
Beale, 21, whose previous court hearing was adjourned at Mt Druitt Local Court on January 13, has been charged with one count of common assault over an incident alleged to have occurred at Tregear in western Sydney in the early hours of July 18 last year.
Because of the timing of the case, selectors decided yesterday to leave him out of the last of NSW's three trials, at Viking Park, Tuggeranong, near Canberra, tomorrow night.
"Kurtley has some issues that he is dealing with this week. We felt that it was more appropriate that he focuses his attention on that court case and deal with that before we worry about any rugby," Waratahs coach Chris Hickey said yesterday.
The NSW side includes a new midfield combination of Berrick Barnes at five-eighth and Daniel Halangahu at inside-centre. But they will switch roles during the game.
''We have some real strong options around 10 and 12, so we feel it is important to take the opportunity to look at them," Hickey said. "That [selection] is only at set pieces. Once the game starts to evolve, you will find 10 and 12 often interchange.
"That is the number they will have on their back, but after that it tends to change around anyhow."
Barnes excelled at five-eighth in NSW's trial against the Fiji Warriors at Orange last Saturday, but Hickey said he was still considering him as an inside-centre.
"Absolutely. He has played Test football at 12, so he is definitely a 12 option for us," Hickey said.
"It is one of those things where you look at different combinations of players.
''Hopefully after this game we will have a clear picture of what our best combination is moving into that first Super 14 game [against the Reds on Saturday week]."
Wallabies returning to the Waratahs tomorrow night for the first time this season in the starting side are loose-head prop Benn Robinson, Dean Mumm, who will start at No.6 but get some game time in the second row later when the two starting second-rowers, Cam Jowitt and Kane Douglas, are switched, and winger Lachie Turner.
Also returning to the Waratahs is back-rower Ben Mowen, who will come off the bench to play his first match in almost six months after recovering from knee surgery.
Wallabies back Drew Mitchell will not play, as he is still recovering from a hamstring injury which ruled him out of the clash against the Fiji Warriors. But Mitchell is expected to be fit for the opening round of the Super 14 next week.
Among the backs kept in the starting side after raising Hickey's interest against Fiji are winger Nemani Nadolo, outside-centre Tom Carter, and fullback Sosene Anesi.
Hickey said Nadolo was "quite impressive", while Anesi "did really good things for us" at fullback.
He said Carter "had a strong game. It will be interesting to see if he can repeat that performance against better opposition."
