Brumbies v Waratahs, Sat 27th Feb, Canberra

Kenny Powers

Ron Walden (29)
It’s time to get started.

It’s been a few years in the making the fall of the Waratahs so can’t blame the coach at this stage.

Roger Davis Chairman of the Waratahs has been there over this time and needs to go and go Monday. So do the development, pathway, recruiters etc or whatever else they call themselves if they have been there over the last couple of years. They need to go and go now.

Yes but like a young racehorse we just want to see improvement throughout the season. Like the Reds pain a couple of seasons ago.

Yes absolutely, hopefully the players don’t get too disenchanted through it all though

I don’t think they will, they are professionals and they’ve done some good things tonight, just couldn’t finish off and ended up 50m back the other way. It’s disheartening at the time but on review they will pull out the positives.

im pretty sure penney has had a part to play with a record drubbing

Huh? The Brumbies attacking shape is much better than the Tahs. As I write this they made another line break.

A rolling maul is a high percentage play if you are good at it. Brumbies would be mad not to use it.

I think it needs to be pointed out that I wrote this about half way through the first half and you replied well into the second half. At the time of writing it was correct. The Waratahs were having a crack and the Brumbies were dull when they had the ball.

He does but Kenny is mostly right. The talent drain has been eye watering and the replacements null. That’s not on Penny’s head, he can only work with what he has. Maybe another coach might be able to do better but we don’t really know that. We saw big improvement last season, the cattle this year are even worse so let’s give him a chance and reserve judgement till the end of the season.

I don't know when his contract is up but if i were Harrison id be getting my manager to call up the Reds and see if they'd push O'Conner back to FB and go there to play

The tahs aren't going to be competitive for another couple of years which isn't going to help his development at all. Lolosio is pulling away from him simply through playing in a vastly superior team

Nah, this is largely on him. Every player is getting worse. Something is going on at the Tahs which is killing raw talent. If it's not Penney, then what is it?
I don’t think every player is getting worse, the depth of the squad has got worse. As the saying goes, you’re only as good as your worst player. Let’s see how the next two weeks work out.

Damn Banks is slow for a fullback

He is actually very very fast. I think Maddocks had a bit of an angle on him with that intercept - also he is no slouch. Banks could also have been keeping a bit in the tank given the score.

Why are people blaming Penney? We're talking a squad that has been ravaged in Sydney with departures up against a fairly settled lineup in Canberra, which is just more of the same from NSW HQ i.e. letting things go to shit, overpaying a few players, then losing them when things go to shit.

Tahs were improved on nearly every aspect from last week except the scoreboard.

Set piece was markedly better, and in fact it was pretty even for both sides bar the utterly terrible scrum refereeing from Berry - the directive is that the scrum must be going FORWARD, not wheeling around the side. Yet, he chose to penalise the Tahs and when it is back-to-back with something else, they are suddenly at the other end.

General play showed some decent touches from the Tahs but defensive alignment was unsurprisingly bad - disruptions, again.

Most people were picking a 40+ margin so not sure why anyone is surprised
