Heard that this opener is going to set the pace for the rest of the season. Brumbies exceptional fitness versus experience from the old boys of the Force ! Who are the players to watch ?

Keen to see how To'omua goes bossing the Brumbies backline. I'm also keen to hear from people how Tomane and Tupou go on their return from league.

Vaea up against Brown/McCallum - can't wait for this match up

Force will get the advantage with the weather. This wet season in Darwin has been one of the hottest in my lifetime. The other possibility is that it will be pissing down raining and will be reduced to trench warfare. Glad the Brumbies are rolling out their top side and I really hope the Force do the same. Pocock playing will be a good leg up for Darwin rugby and hope to see the freak in action. I hope the Brumbies hold another open training session like last year and see Jake put them through their paces. There is a lot of unknowns about this game and I look forward to see what is rolled out. I expect a scrappy affair though. The footy becomes like soap playing in our humid weather.

The ABC might cover the game on Territory Sport but I am not sure.

"Like" doesn't quite do it. Vaea will run over a few people but it will be interesting to see if he has a bit more to his game this year to offset the fact that he is a short-arse and doesn't jump in the lineout.

LG,

This could be the reason he doesn't start many matches and could be seen as an impact player off the bench like Ipolito Fenukitau once was

I don't see why it should be too much different from 2011. Vaea started in every game last year, except 3 when he wasn't even in the 22. One was against the Cheetahs who were assumed, not least by the Tahs players, to be a weak team. Another was against the Force, when Rocky had his one game at 6, and the 3rd was against the Rebels, when a lot of dirt-trackers played.

I don't see any problem starting Vaea in 2012 either, with Mowen in the team playing 6, or somebody else who is a jumper. The trouble will be if they play Hooper and Colby together and they usually hoist Colby anyway if that is the case. Anybody can be lifted up and even Waugh used to be elevated for the Tahs sometimes, but "doesn't jump in the lineout" is not something you want on your CV as an 8.

Strangely, it may not affect his chances of playing for the Wallabies if he is otherwise good enough. Since the decline of Waugh, before which he and Smith both started sometimes, their 6s have been genuine jumpers, in the main, and you don't need more that 3.

Let's not get into the future and suggest that Pocock and Gill could both start eventually. Let's save that discussion.
