Well done Brumbies. There were moments when they looked like the Brumbies of old - not enough of them, but they were good to see.
Well done to Huxley also. This was no retirement party for a has been player who got dealt a bad hand. It was a tough Super14 game and he not only held his own but also was one of the best players.
I was also impressed by the two 18 y.o. fetchers, Hooper and Fainga'a, and the full game played by Matt To'omua. Phibbs didn't have a perfect game as he dithered too much on the Chief's goal line and should have launched the backs more, but he was damn good in other parts of the game. He'd have to be the best reserve scrummie in Oz Super14 teams.
It wasn't a perfect game by the home team by any means. In the first half there were two many incursions by the Chiefs around the rucks. The Kiwis must have looked at what the Blues did last week. In the 2nd half the Brumbies should have scored more tries. In particular, after been giving penalty advantage they could have hoisted a kick wide to the in-goal area, a la rugby league, or at least dished the pill out. They could have come back for the penalty if it didn't work.
Instead the Chiefs were allowed stay in the game.
The Chiefs were just as mediocre in some parts of the game though their defence on the line in the 2nd half was tops. They must drive their fans spare though. Scrummie Leonard was good as was Kahui but Lauaki looked like a fatty from a comic book.
Referee Peyper was better than in his curious exhibition in Perth last week and I'm not just saying that because the Brumbies won. The Chiefs were lucky they didn't get a card for repeated infringements on their goal line, on the other had that last try by the Brumbies looked a bit dodgy. But much better Peyper.
