Brumbies 2020

The smoke must really be affecting Canberrans.

BH it's bush fire smoke. Legalised Pot doesn't come in for a little while yet, I believe.

And let me just say that it is not smoke haze. It is fucking smoke pollution. Calling it haze is just the pollies and journs way of minimising the situation. Not having a shot at you here btw.

There's a half-decent chance that the three first games are all cancelled.

Potentially the third against the Highlanders could be played in NZ. Reds game potentially could be moved if they act quickly. Certainly not an easy thing to do.

The loss to the Brumbies is concerning and at this point I think they will lose at least 2 x home games revenue. The potential points loss if games are scrapped will hurt their finals hopes and impact on their financials as well.

IMHO, if they are going to have to cancel the Canberra based games they should try play regionally or even internationally (Fiji?) if possible to showcase the game.

Obviously sport is secondary to health, especially in these conditions. I won't begrudge them cancelling the games, in big part because I know they would be loathe to do it.

From a finals point of view, the Highlanders made the playoffs at 8th last year with the following record:
  • Six wins;
  • Three draws;
  • Seven losses;
  • Two try BPs; and,
  • Four losing BPs.
The Bulls finished 5th with the following record:
  • Eight wins;
  • Two draws;
  • Six losses;
  • Three try BPs; and,
  • Two losing BPs.
Most importantly, only five teams had a winning record last year, and all five made the playoffs.

So if the Brumbies end up with three draws on their hands straight out of the gates, their remaining games are:
  1. Chiefs away;
  2. Sunwolves away;
  3. Waratahs home;
  4. Blues away;
  5. Reds away;
  6. Hurricanes home;
  7. Jaguares home;
  8. Sharks away;
  9. Bulls away;
  10. Stormers home;
  11. Rebels away;
  12. Waratahs away; and,
  13. Sunwolves home.
So, if you can imagine a world where the Brumbies win seven of those games (e.g. Sunwolves x2, Waratahs x2, Jaguares home, Stormers home, Rebels away), then you can imagine a world in which the Brumbies are competing for a home QF despite having three games cancelled.

If you can imagine them winning nine of those games (e.g.Sunwolves x2, Waratahs x2, Blues away, Hurricanes home, Jaguares home, Stormers home, Rebels away), then you can imagine a world in which the Brumbies are fighting for 2nd place on the table.

In short, as much as it would suck to have games cancelled, we live in a world where it's not unrealistic to still imagine the Brumbies hosting a QF despite it.

^^^^^ based on all the remaining teams performing the same as they did last year. It's sport; anything is possible.

McKellar named a leadership squad of:
  • Tom Cusack;
  • Andy Muirhead;
  • Tom Banks;
  • Irae Simone;
  • Joe Powell; and,
  • Pete Samu.
I expect Cusack will be named the captain. He's also replaced Lealiifano on the UC advertising board, if that means anything.

really? That's the list? I would have though Cusack is the least likely of those to be in the starting team.

I would have thought one of the props, but acknowledge that it's hard work carrying your team up front, both physically and mentally.

Gee of that lot, it's probably Samu isn't it?

I would’ve thought the main thing ruling Cusack out is that he’s not going to be around much because he’s chasing the Olympics Sevens team.........

Further to this, the Crimes reported on Dec 21st:
McKellar is yet to settle on a captain for next year. The contenders are likely to be Allan Ala'alatoa, Tom Cusack, Joe Powell and Lachlan McCaffrey

If Cusack was committed to the full season I wouldn’t mind him as captain...........

There’d be questions about whether he’s a starter, but he started every game bar one last year and was in great form in the latter part of the season...........

He’d have to play at 7 though with Valetini and Samu at 6 and 8 respectively.

I'd love for it to be McCaffrey, but I agree with Slim that the starters should be Valetini and Samu. I'd also really like to see more of Brown at 7, he feels like a Beau Robinson style flanker and I feel we could really use someone like him.

I also think the captain should be the first name on the team sheet, and that would be Ala'alatoa.

Props aren’t really great options for captain though as they generally will only be on the field for 50-60 mins...........

That's fair, we all remember the problems of the Moore era (though that was arguably worse when he was on the field).

If it's Cusack or McCaffrey, we'll just find a way to make them fit with Samu and Valetini.
