Very handy to have Carter "locally" in case of injury call up. Still have to wait 48 hours but there will be no jet lag.

Do the "Joker" contracts used by the Euro Clubs during RWC include a clause allowing for International call up without breaching the contract or the ARU being up for quadzillions of Euros in compensation?

I realise this is a Brumbies thread, but seeing we're discussing Brumbies and non-Brumbies players in the RWC ghost squad I can't understand why Jones is so far down the pecking order of Oz locks. I'd have him in front of both Horwill and Carter, even possibly/probably in the original RWC 31 selection.

Bit of Horwill Syndrome.

Mumm preferred as Lock who can play 6, Fardy preferred as 6 who can play lock. Much as Mumm preferred as backup Loosehead lock to Horwill, and Skelton/Douglas preferred as tighthead lock.

Cubelli is the perfect 9 signing, I think a great player who will grow in under Larkham plus add so much spice.

If they can work around the language barrier, I thinks he is a very interesting prospect; an international that has had no exposure to anything except Puma Rugby.

So a few season at the Brumbies with the likes of Larkham (and I hope Greagan) and he could potentially improve and diversify his game to a whole new level.

Carter also has more Test experience including a solid game against the All Blacks. Compared to Jones who had a poor EOYT.

Pretty close call given Jones' superb super xv season but in a RWC year you'd probably have to go with the experienced guy.

I'm not arguing against the proposition that experience prevails, but I really do think the bit about Jones' poor EOYT is mistaken to a degree and is being overdone to the extent it is fast becoming folk-lore. He was barely used on the EOYT, from memory only having two short incursions off the bench. In his first outing, he made two mistakes on his first two handling opportunities. I'd put this down very much to first game nerves. After that he was much more solid and made some fairly good ground winning runs. There is no concern, I believe, about his defensive work or his work rate.

I fear Jones will be maligned for some time yet until he does get another chance to show what he's got.

Cheika likes a certain attitude about the training paddock as well (pure speculation)

Didn't he start a test? I recall him being held up on one run and being turned over on another. He seemed to lack mongrel and impact to me.

I think his work rate has increased in the super xv season and is superb but if your picking a lock for his workrate then you can't go past Carter.

Cheika also stated he wanted two types of locks, A line-out specialist which Simmons and Mumm cover, and a bruiser which Douglas and Skelton cover. This is why Horwill missed out as he didn't quite fit the role of either and was more inbetween. Same reason maybe for Jones.

Kind of contradicts the preference of Carter over Jones but then again thats only an assumption anyway. Also questions why Horwill was even given a shot to begin with (over Jones).
