The very same people are probably the ones complaining the club doesn't engage enough with the community, so they can't have their cake and eat it too.

Yes, the same that allowed the various iterations of the club (Canberra South Bowls, Royals, Easts..) to drown financially because they didn't support them, then wonder why a group wouldn't want to try something other than build another club. Geniuses.

I think there is quite a lot behind the Govt's decision to not award Huawei the NBN contract. The Brumbies are one of the unlucky fallouts. Many will blame Fagan and the board but this was out of their hands. They had done well to attract a sponsor of this size in the first place.
Not great news for them just before the start of the season, but they will be ok. It's time for some of the affluent rugby supporters to come to the party.

Rugbyreg, have a look at the attached .pdf, which outlines the plans the Brumbies have made. You'll have to disregard the oval developments, as the local community group whinged loud enough to prevent it going ahead.

The planned apartments are in a dress circle part of Canberra - 150 apartments would generate a monstrous amount of cash for the Brumbies. Houses in the area are (roughly) around the 1 million mark for unrenovated, 2 million renovated etc.

Empire, this is exactly what east's could have set themselves up with across from the kingo if they had some foresight as a club.

Don't even get me started...!

Too bad those at the club now weren't running the show a decade ago, things may be quite different!

Either way, hopefully the Brumbies can secure their future, make squillions and then re-invest in the local comp (juniors, schools and seniors), build an awesome training facility and run a cutting edge program that attracts the best. Canberra into a rugby Mecca... We can dream.

It does look like that the reasons behind the company pulling out are out of the Brumbies hands, but I don't think that people care about the reasons why and will crucify Andrew Fagan over this. He tried thinking outside the box in trying to source new funds for the team. Relocating the clubhouse has been explored previously but proved unsuccessful when trying to use facilities at the AIS.

It may be of interest to note that Brumbies are not the only sporting organisation in Canberra trying to make money out of a development. The Federal Golf Club, located on the slopes of Red Hill in the Woden area, have tried something similar and are also facing problems. They are more reliant than the Brumbies on getting their plans through and could fold if not resolved.

Well yeah you mightn't blame fagan for this...

But in 12 months time when the Brumbies post a loss, it's only going to fall at the feet of one person...

This is the thin end of a significant wedge: if it came to it I doubt the ARU has the funds to bail out the Brumbies - if you believe their constant refrain at any rate.
This cant only be about the size of the market in Canberra - these games are televised internationally.

Brumbies CEO Andrew Fagan was on local radio today and mentioned a few things of note regarding the major sponsor issue.

  • The Brumbies and Huawei will try and get the agreement back up and running and said that the ARU were well aware of the situation as Huawei were looking at being a partner sponsor of the Australian SupeRugby conference.
  • The Brumbies do have some alternatives in mind and discussions have begun in recent days with prospective sponsors although no dollar amount was mentioned, it won't be a 'get what you can' situation, but with less than 2 months til the season kicks off it will no doubt be a delicate negotiation phase.

I was under the impression that Computer Associates had pulled out sponsorship deals elsewhere as well because they weren't doing well?

The reasons the Brumbies lost CA as a sponsor was because 1) the global arm of CA were struggling and made decisions to cease sponsorships and 2) the guy in charge of Aus sponsor deals at CA and had a close relationships with the Brumbies got the boot from CA.

Given their success a decade ago, it's not a big stretch to imagine they thought they were backing the right horse, so to speak.
I doubt million dollar deals go without a few checks... Even for mates.

the main sponsor is a national brand and southern hemisphere, not local… CA was a great sponsor for about 13 years and had to withdraw due to a significant business down turn… Brumbies are a good brand and the Super Rugby is a good brand to be associated with, the Brumbies will find another.

Frankly is an old Chinese business strategy, one which the Chinese often do in business, they create interest, string the process along until they know their the only company in the running and just before signing, they walk away from the table so they can come back and get a better price later...

The hardest thing is even once they've signed getting payment out of them within reasonable time. Brumbies are probably better off getting less from a company they know will pay on time…
