back 2nd round hopefully:

Ulugia returns to the CA Brumbies to stem props’ curse

Jonh Ulugia has returned to the CA Brumbies on a short-term contract to provide coverage in an injury-struck front row.

Ulugia’s return was brought about after the CA Brumbies lost three props to injury last week.

On Monday Jerry Yanuyanutawa was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his left foot and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks while Brumbies Academy prop Jono Owen will miss three weeks after sustaining a grade one strain in his right calf muscle on Thursday.

Wallabies front rower Ben Alexander will meet with the surgeon this week (Wednesday) after suffering a fractured fifth metacarpal in his left hand during a training accident on Thursday. Should he not require surgery he is expected to be back in six weeks which would have him available for the CA Brumbies’ Week Two match against the Bulls in Pretoria.

Ulugia, who returned to training with the CA Brumbies today, will now join Salesi Ma’afu and Guy Shepherdson as first-string props within the squad.

CA Brumbies Head Coach Andy Friend says Ulugia is expected to make a smooth transition back into the squad.

“It’s not ideal losing three front rowers in quick succession but the silver lining is that it’s happening now and not one or two weeks into the Super 14,” he said.

“We’re fortunate that we’ve been able to bring someone into the squad who has Super 14 experience and who knows the CA Brumbies set-up and players within the squad extremely well.

“John’s only 23 and still has the ambition to play professional rugby. He’s been keeping fit and continuing his training up in Sydney so physically he’s ready to go.”

Ulugia spent four seasons (2006-2009) with the CA Brumbies and has played 12 Investec Bank Super 14 matches at prop and hooker.

It's great news about Alexander - I was gonna suggest he go the Jone Tawake route and amputate.

Interesting to see the amount of players with League backgrounds in that list. I counted 6, with a couple out of last year's Toyota Cup. Good to see.

the fact his rep duties include :

Representative Honours: Urba Under 18’s (2007), Urba Under 19’s (2008), Argentina Under 20’s (2007-2008),

I reckon its a pretty good chance. Sizeable lad aint he? 21 and 113kgs.

A few other interesting signings in that list as well..

Kurt Mulcahy, quit the Roosters to try for the Olympics, a very good runner over 200 & 400m

Jesse Mogg, thought he might have been lost to the NRL, but good to see him return, was a leading try scorer in 2009 Brisbane Premier Grade before switching to the Broncos U20 team.

Uglia is a Vic product and I'm sure is being looked at for a Rebels contract.

Hopefully the Brumbies don't get too keen and sign him up properly.

George Smith is looking more like a front rower these days

george_smith-420x0.jpg

Smith acknowledged his fitness wasn't near that of the Brumbies who had returned to training earlier.

"Come the first game, I think definitely I will be where I need to be," Smith said.

I don't think he can afford to be so lax in his fitness work anymore. I'd like to see him work on his speed rather than be working off his excess Xmas baggage in February.
