Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Got to say it's a bit disappointing to not see a wallaby test in top 2.
Not really.

For decades those that follow the EPL have gotten into the habit of going to pubs etc in the early hours to watch these games together.

Rugby fans haven't had the need to do this as it's only an odd game that is on at the middle of the night not 20+ that a European team will play in a season.

Hopefully it means more pubs will have Stan.

Nine’s new English Premier League broadcast deal has helped add more than 200,000 subscribers to Stan, building on a record result for the streaming service as investors cheered the full-year results from the media company.

Nine posted profits of $194 million, down 10 per cent, and revenue up 2 per cent to $2.68 billion in its final full year as the majority owner of Domain Group. Shares jumped 11 per cent in early trade.
Earnings at Stan grew by 31 per cent to $60.3 million, with revenue up 10 per cent to $492 million. Financial results, as well as subscriber growth on Stan sparked by the Premier League acquisition, is not reflected in this year’s results. https://www.smh.com.au/business/com...-add-200-000-subscribers-20250826-p5mq05.html
Would be good if in the not too distant future Stan offer a standalone option for Stan sport. To the benefit of both rugby and football fans.

I was responding to the statement you made about if people that got into the EPL went to the A-League there wouldn't be issues. People more often than not follow the top Leagues in their sports.

It will probably make having Stan a much more attractive prospect for any Pubs/Sports Bars that don't already have it on their books too, gets more casual eyes on the game hopefully (if we presume they're not running dodgy firesticks)

A lot of die hard Soccer fans are on broken fire sticks. Mad if you dont. I'm sure heaps of ex pats and fringe fans though have signed up.

Pubs may get it but Rugby has to make it an attractive product. Walk into most and their content to have ESPN highlights or Fox League, Fox Footy going with replays.

Stan needs an autoplay option for pubs - it's easy for them to simply dial up ESPN or Fox Footy and leave it there 24 hr a day, whereas you need to dial up a particular game on Stan. Stan's got enough content to just roll out one thing after another in a single stream.
This annoys me for back to back rugby games.

Yeah annoys me also, often on Kayo i just put the NRL Live channel on so i get back-to-back NRL games.

technically it's not hard to run a live channel for someone like Stan/Kayo given the infrastructure they already have..

But in terms of cost efficiency, it does change quite a bit. Fixed costs would jump quite a lot.. And not entirely sure, but I think running a 'live channel' in Australia comes with different regulatory and legal requirements

How would it raise fixed costs? I don't think you need studio hosting or anything like that, just a stream that plays game replays, existing other content like Between Two Posts, and then prioritises live games when they're on. I'd have thought it would take an intern about an hour to set up a queue of content for a week.

I've no idea about the legalities, but Stan already has live games, and would be showing content they already own...

Lots of "eurosnobs" in Australia, if these people showed up to a-league games there wouldn't be clubs getting their licence stripped(Western United).
Giving one's time and money to watch players who aren't good enough to get a contract in thirty better leagues isn't for everybody.

Cloud hosting services and requirements change, a 24/7 live channel increases fixed costs versus an on demand model. Bandwidth and supporting services go from an on-demand model to constantly pushing regardless of number of viewers. Shortening the ‘live stream’ and ‘live playback’ availability of matches to 2-3 hours whilst the match is live reduces storage/computer requirements as well.

When I mentioned legalities. it’s not about owning the content, i was referring to regulatory requirements that can come with a ‘live channel’ by Australian broadcast standards. live channels can meet thresholds that require extra regulatory overheads relating to content quotas, advertising caps and rules on gambling change, live captioning on streams etc. it was introduced to protect actual FTA channels, unsure how Kayo navigate this or just cop the cost
