Mat Rogers is always interesting, has some genuinely different and useful perspectives, but he was asked on Inside Line this week if he'd pick Maddie Levi in the Wallaroos - c'mon, surely someone on that program has to point out that he's her manager.

I think the line is pretty blurred these days with that stuff. Braith Anasta hosts the most popular NRL show on Fox and he manages a bunch of those players.

And whilst the president of RUPA is commentating the games they probably don't care too much about a player manager giving opinions on his own players.

It's also a question on a rugby show. It's not like Rogers is waging a public campaign for Levi to be selected etc.

Likewise, find me the Australian rugby fan who would say no to picking Maddi Levi in the Wallaroos side. Everyone would want to see how it goes. Given the play of Caslick and Teagan Levi in XVs it's clear that the star players from 7s are some of the best rugby players we have and definitely at least hold their own in XVs.

It probably depends on how it's being framed in the moment. Are they asking for his expert opinion or just throwing it up as a general discussion point for the group?

It probably doesn't harm the show to acknowledge in the moment that he is her manager either way though.

I think it would harm the show if you adopted a standard where you try and disclose every potential conflict of interest each time.

Payten has worked for Rugby Australia. Atko has worked for the Queensland Reds. Rogers is a player manager. Harrison is the president of RUPA. Everyone in Australian rugby has potential conflicts of interest.

That's important to consider when making decisions but on a fairly lighthearted panel TV show?

It would be rugby trying to make a rod for its own back.

I haven't seen it, and I don't care enough to go back and watch it. I agree it's probably a non issue from what I know about how the shows topics week to week are generally discussed. But to me it's less about declaring conflicts of interest, and more the undertone of the editorial decision to ask him, and pointlessness of the question if they know he's her manager.

Yeah, I'm not suggesting a continuous declaration of everyone's conflicts of interest, no need for that. The Rogers-Levi one just stood out for me. I actually think it's to the show's benefit that the participants have strong ties to rugby admin, it's just reasonable to acknowledge those in some cases. I'm particularly not worried about Harrison's RUPA role, nothing he says on that show is understandable anyway.

There would be a lot of Wallabies who were selected from the Waratahs with a conflict of interest asterisk next to their name if we started declaring conflicts of interest :p

It’s a pretty interesting show if you can block out Goog’s rhetoric.

A fair bit of "trust me bro" with these numbers as they don't give the actuals, and a lot of the difference could probably also be explained by not having the low crowd and broadcast numbers for the Rebels included in the averages, but for what it's worth here is what Super Rugby is claiming.....
  • A 21.5 per cent increase in average game attendance across the competition to Round 8.
  • Strong growth in TV audiences across Australia (30 per cent increase in Nine viewership to Round 8), New Zealand (12 per cent increase in Sky Sport viewership to Round 3) and Fiji (395,436 peak Walesi App viewership in Round 4 – more than a third of the Fijian population).

Depends if they're using all the numbers or just the reported ones - super round was pretty much their only reported crowds for last year and they were reasonable as far as competition averages are concerned.

But aside from that, reported crowds have improved for the Reds, Force, and tahs (there aren't enough numbers out there for Brumbies games to tell). Not sure if the kiwi sides make their numbers public.
