Were the expectations too high if he hasn't met expectations?
He's played 92 tests. He's got the equal most Super Rugby caps for the Waratahs ever and has more Super Rugby caps than anyone else in the competition in 2020.
He's one of 10 Wallabies to ever get a nomination for the World Rugby Player of the Year in the 20 years its been running (no Aussie has ever won) and one of 12 players to win the John Eales Medal in the 18 years it has run for and played at 3 Rugby World Cups.
If you were offered that as the future career of a superstar schoolboy you would surely take it every day of the week.

Watched the Waratahs beat the Crusaders again for the title. One thing that really struck me was how good Foley was, including his kicking. What went wrong? The only thing I can think of is that he was misguided by a succession of kicking coaches?
The rest of his game would be expected to deteriorate a bit over time, but his kicking should have been getting better and better.

I would take a less gifted attacking player for someone who can kick and defend any day.

Foley started performing under his old standard once the rush defense came into fashion, infact almost all Aussie 10s did. I’d say the lack of players that win contact in our teams compared to other teams meant we struggled more they did. We now have some more dynamic talent coming through which will help.

I hear you, and it seems a common position from many who have strong knowledge of the game.
But I don't agree. For me the core of a 10 should be an ability to read and direct the game, excellence in passing (both sides), fabulous passing kick, and instinctiveness in attack. If this comes with defence and general kicking/goal kicking that is crazy in effectiveness. But it starts with the game play effectiveness and if necessary a coach should be capable of covering weakness in defence and kicking.

Having a 12, 13, and 15 who do their job means you can get away with a 10 who is an acceptable-but-nothing-special defender. And you can coach anyone with a decent work ethic to that level of defensive ability.
Likewise, having another goalkicker in the team allows you to overlook that gap in a 10, but selecting a good team includes having someone to kick if the first kicker goes down, so that role generally sits within the starting and reserve halves. Pretty much anyone can be taught to be a good goalkicker on the training ground, but the true art of clutch goalkicking is being able to mentally put yourself back on the training ground when 100k people are hooting and hollering around you, and not anyone can do that.
Ultimately, the playmaking in the team is driven by the halves. Even when you see the forwards "take over" for a while, they are "taking over" because the scrumhalf has decided to allow it. I don't think you can overlook a flyhalf performing badly with the excuse "the 9 doesn't understand what's happening outside them" because the other side of that coin is "the 10 doesn't understand what's happening in front of them", and that's pretty damning.

I don't think KB (Kurtley Beale) is the best player who's ever been, but by God, he's given us some great highlights.
He's one of the few players knocking about where when he has the ball in his hand, you pause, anticipating maybe, a bit of magic. An entertainer. How many other players can we say that about?

Plus, you know....Bloemfontein and that kick...yup
