I have some slim hope with Kayo. I think at the moment foxtel (and super rugby with it) is completely lost to the majority of millennials. Speaking from experience, no sane student or young professional would ever waste money on foxtel. Most of us don't even have bloody TVs in our houses.

I got Kayo as soon as it came out and I think it's brilliant. Much more cost effective and easy to use, if RA is clever (haha) they will market hard with this demographic. Here's hoping.

I'm looking at it, and just weighing up the costs v benefits.

But agree - if the take up of Kayo isn't also corresponding to a take up of rugby viewers, it's a worry.
I think also, as Kayo has 50 sports on it (currently), we can't assume that everyone who takes it up will watch the rugby (I know two people at work who have it, and they won't watch the rugby, they've got it for other sports like surfing etc). As above, if RA knows what's good for them, they'll market the Kayo market.

Will Kayo viewing be included in ratings totals?

Might make it hard for RA if not, as you'd expect a decline in traditional Fox viewership due to people jumping to Kayo.

Oztam base their ratings on a survey of 2,120 households with Foxtel.

I'd imagine they won't include a household without Foxtel (on TV) in their sample.

The ratings are based on audio - so if anyone in the 2,120 households does use Kayo or similar it would be picked up in the ratings.

How much do you think Kayo paying Foxtel to broadcast sports? Would be interesting to find out how what % they are getting from kayo subscriptions

So far no.

I asked a client of mine who works in in the media [he is a lawyer] and is involved in researching legal aspects of sports media contracts. Mostly minor sports like hockey does some work with Basketball as well.

He said he has """heard""" so Chinese whispers maybe, but he sent me this and its what he has heard as Fox are keeping it very close and in-house similar to Telstra on streaming .

Anywho this is what he sent me and its what he has heard meaning no way of proving or disproving and without knowing his source it makes it even more hhhmmmm how reliable is it.

He said Kayo and Fox numbers where about the same... so if Fox was 50K Kayo would be about 50K ... he did not specify any sport in particular so Fox are broadcasting Cricket Test, BBL, A-League, Basketball I think"

Articles in the media today about big falls in BBL crowds and ratings with Fox wanting things changed.

I have read also that last year AFL crowds and ratings were down.

I do wonder aloud if the commercialism of sport, especially traditional codes has turned people off and are we in the early stages where E- Sports and X-Sports grow and traditional codes start to loose their mass appeal...

The BBL has its own issues. The standard has dropped sharply this year which is a major problem but also Australian cricket is on the nose and the team is performing badly. If we were smashing England in a home Ashes series at the same time I guarantee the ratings would be much better.

I think a lot of it comes down to choice. There is just so much more content (sport or otherwise) available to almost every viewer than there ever was in the past.

I'm not so sure. Test crowd/viewers are completely different to those of BBL. BBL was designed to be entertainment and not sport. Majority of the viewers do not actually care about the result they are just interested in the entertainment.

The entertainment value is inextricably linked to the quality though. There's been a lot more really one sided matches and the run rates, scores and numbers of sixes are well down.

I also think there is a huge crossover between the two. Fans go for different reasons but a lot of those are the same fans. I think you're less likely as a core fan to make the effort to go to BBL matches if you're generally down on cricket and less likely as a casual fan because there isn't as much hype around cricket enticing you to attend.

Id say the entertainment value is more closely linked to excitement rather than quality. BBL is relatively young (shiny new thing). Close finishes always gloss over boring games in any sport (see RWC 99 semi v SA). Quality batting is entertaining but quality bowling not so much. The BBL crowd is also very young. It is aimed squarely at people/families that are not necessarily interested in test cricket.

I think it is also a problem of reduced disposable income coming into play. Despite the protestations that the Economy is going great guns, the real, working man's economy has gone backwards over the past many years. I believe the drop in match attendances and reduced club memberships aligns with a general drop in discretionary expenditure for many people.

BBL has the same problem Aus rugby has, salary cap is too low meaning the quality of players and hence the games is not what it was in previous years.

CA have the luxury of investing additional resources into the franchises if they want to get the marquee players back. Of all places they are choosing the Bangladesh League at the moment

RA don't have that luxury, and are stuffed.

Story going around that Optus is thinking of making a play for the World Cup. Although I am an Optus customer, I don’t think the game is popular enough to get a positive result from having it purely streamed. The article also suggests that Fox and Ten are the only other realistic providers.

In good news it won’t be on 9 after they said no. 7 apparently didn’t answer when asked.
