Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

So it went backwards really?

Anyone see the crowd for the Raiders on the weekend. Could be the combined season total for the Brums...

At a minimum it shows that even with the Aussie teams starting well and what we, the hardcore fans, are perceiving as a better comp this year, the viewers aren’t changing their minds.

Once again, general public, who are really the ones watching on FTA, need to see Wallabies results to have any real impact on their rugby opinions. The BIL tour is massive for rugby in Oz.

No not really...

'national reach' is a finicky metric to reference as it's only 1 min of 'watching' to count, which is influenced by factors like which channel the game is broadcast on; from memory last year Reds v War was on the primary 9 Channel, and this year it was on Gem, the primary statistic from this is the average rating which was up marginally.

I'd say a higher rating on the secondary channel is actually a decent improvement

What was on the main channel on Saturday at the same time?

Based on 2024 views it must have been close to the highest viewership for a SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) game in 2024, so am surprised we got pushed.

Yeah, the reach is almost a meaningless stat, I wish they hadn't switched to promoting that one, all it does is confuse everyone.

Pretty much the same result as last year, especially with margin of error.

Last year clashed with a Matildas game on FTA, this year with a Broncos game on Foxtel

Reach is just the sexier number.

I mean - surely it would take more than four rounds of decent quality for fans to show interest in Super Rugby again anyway. Four rounds verse 10 years of garbage (give or take a few).

It's just hamstrung by it's lack of accessibility. The better quality rugby might translate to more viewers if there were more games they could watch. 1 game a week on the lowest night of TV consumption isn't enough to register on peoples radars.

There won't be a better rated or higher crowd numbers than this game regardless of the hype.

And yes I agree with you, which was the point of my Wallabies comment. Super Rugby as a competition doesn't have enough exposure regardless of how good the Aussie teams are to make significant shift in the viewership year on year. We need the Wallabies to be firing and that will roll onto SRP (Super Rugby Pacific).

Probably another sign that we can't put TV ratings on the pedestal as the sole or biggest indicator of popularity of health (or lack there of), nor even compare it with NRL/ AFL.

I wish we got Stan ratings. If that showed year on year growth you'd be happy. It makes sense to me that casual interest would be fairly level while more intent fans would become more engaged with higher quality.

I'd love Rugby to be able to get on Sunday arvos. NRL has a game kick off at 4pm but I'd love to see a game on FTA kick off at 2pm or something like that. Saturday night is crushed by other things and peoples plans. I know it's not prime time but I don't know if it would mean a drop off from current viewer numbers.
