Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

GBR podcast is back tomorrow with ep 1 of their RWC series. Good stuff. Australia needs more professional podcasts with money like them (no offense to podcasters around here).
Takeaway from this ep is Gits does a damn good Eddie impression

The Rugby Report Card guys just got mentioned on Between The Posts by Morgs.

Good wrap for the GAGR Podcast stable :)
Only listen sporadically but I get the impression the report card boys are barely hanging on given the dire state of rugby and their other commitments.

I understand TV markets in the US & Australia are different, but in time we tend to follow.

Four articles from the US about the future, if interested in these sort of things hope you enjoy, if not just ignore.

Not unusual in any industry which is facing new technologies and emerging disrupters.

We will inevitably see consolidation in the SVOD space. There’s a maturing phase here as existing catalogue agreements expire, and some of the big players like Paramount may find they’ve better off selling their own catalogues rather then hosting a SVOD service themselves.

For sport, it’s inevitable we will see codes hosting their own platforms in the long term.

Domestically; the local SVODs are most at risk of been swallowed, however media ownership and anti-siphoning laws will hold that back. Nine and Foxtel hold an edge over Ten and Seven by owning multiple media forums.

Can't read the article as it's behind a paywall - but there is something on Couriermail today about Nine and Stan potentially bailing out on rugby due to the amateur state of the game.

Anyone read the article and can provide some context?

Can't get the CM, but it could be an extension of what The Code published in what could be described as a (somewhat valid) hit job / opinion piece

Nine and Stan Sport have the rights to rugby until the end of 2025, but already have suggested they won’t be paying what they are now – $27 million cash annually – to renew.

Industry insiders say Nine and Stan are building a war chest to make a bold bid for exclusive rights to the NRL when the current deal with Nine and pay television network Fox Sports expires at the end of the 2027 season.

There will be little money for rugby from Nine, and other broadcasters won’t be throwing cash at the game.

They can’t just bail, that wouldn’t hold up very well in court. However we are about to come back around to another contractual negotiations period with the tv deal expiring in the next 18months. It would just be a negotiation tactic to drive price down.

Personally I enjoy the 9/Stan production but think it’s destroyed the product even further because it’s essentially more hidden than it was on Fox. It wouldn’t surprise me to see us jump back to fox if the money isn’t there. Without rugby StanSport basically doesn’t exist.

Remember this is the same party that threatened to leave the NRL, now they are wanting the exclusive rights in 2027 lol

We aren’t going to be in a position where nobody wants to be associated with rugby with Lions then WC quickly approaching

If that's true, that's the real death knell for rugby in Australia - if you can't get people to watch it, there's going to be no money to pay the players.

I’d put good money on that the next broadcast deal will be more than it currently is. Not saying it will be remotely enough or a huge increase but tv companies are clamoring for live sport.

The ARU needs to move away from Stan, we wonder why so many of the young blokes are going to league and the answer is quite clear. The NRL has games on 8 games shown every weekend on either 9 or FoxLeague, yet the ARU is forcing parents to fork out $10 a month to watch any super rugby match and all Wallabies test matches, the occasional home game is shown on free to air. How are we meant to move away from this elitist product when we lose a whole demographic of young people who can’t afford the additional $10 bill each month?

Basic Foxtel + Sports package costs you $60-$75 a month, Kayo alone costs you $25 for the minimum package, the same as Basic Stan plus Sport.

At least compare apples with apples and get your facts right...

Only three NRL games are shown on 9 per week for the majority of the season; the rest are on FoxLeague as you said, which is either behind a more expensive (Foxtel) or comparable (Kayo) paywall.

One Super game is shown per week on 9 during the regular season, and all Wallabies home tests.

Some seem to have forgotten how absolutely dire Super Rugby broadcasting was when it was solely a Fox product. 9 and Stan have made solid inroads in production value and availability.

You get a lot more content on Kayo though. All the League, AFL, Cricket, F1. Then NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL. They aren’t even close to the same.

I only know a handful of people with traditional Foxtel. You get the platforms you want for kids which is mostly YouTube for me anyway and then your interests and get rid of channels you never watch.

I tend to think this sort of article is Ch9 seeing an opportunity in disaster to get ahead on the next negotiations. Not uncommon. Didn’t 7 do it to cricket recently?

Did you just start following rugby in 2021?

The Stan deal landed more FTA content for Australian rugby and a superior streaming product.
