Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Disney launch Star in a couple of weeks which will bring together all of their movie/TV content from 20th century Fox, FX, Touchstone, ESPN+ etc......

It will eventually have repercussions for all of the other streaming services, but when the contracts on those programs expire on Foxtel, they’re a tad fucked.

Yes, this impacts Stan's catalogue quite significantly too, I think - part of why they're diversifying into sport.

Yeah absolutely.
SVOD is only going to get even more competitive, and not all the current ones will be here. Stan and Binge/Foxtel probably have the most to lose with the large catalogues creating their own service. Live sport is arguably a cheap way of creating their own content when you consider what Netflix spends on some of their movies and series.

I think the biggest risk for union on Stan will be at the next league media deal. If 9 thinks this streaming thing works and throw the kitchen sink to get all the league, union will potentially disappear again. It gives a window for union to show 9 what it can do

I think the biggest risk for rugby is that we get series of dead dull games with aimless box kicking, ponderous referee decisions, copious scrum resets etc

We continue on a path we were already heading.

I’d rather go down swinging then not fire a shot.

Yeah, obviously we take the shot - just our hopes are now being materialised and no more living in the safe land of hypotheticals.

I enjoyed the rule changes in today's trial match. Game felt quicker than normal.

Absolutely, and to be fair, its a pretty good chance.

Its been interesting to hear some of the comments from Nine about what they want from the teams as well, how they want them to take ownership of the entertainment, and didn’t say it exactly but sounds like they want more then your standard cliche replies and responses to interviews. I guess they want this to help drive discussion and headlines.

Also, ill be interested to see what Nine has demanded in terms of access to the players/interviews. Years ago my roommate dated a rising Ch 9 sports presenter, who is now quite prominent. I asked why she didn't do more interviews on rugby teams, she said it was all too hard. They would go to a training sessions and wouldn't be allowed access to the player they wanted, or it wouldn't be for enough time for anything reportable. Whereas they could go to a NRL team training, and be given complete access and get some quality interviews to broadcast that night.

Will Stan allow people to watch the game at a time they choose or due to being a live broadcast is this the only option?

I often work when games are on and may not watch until a few hours after kick-off. Will I be able to watch the game when I choose to?

I would be very surprised if they didn’t have replays and starting broadcasts whenever you want.

Kayo have that ability and Stan are trying to go into that same space now, so you’d think they need to match the minimum functions with their product.

They will also have a 24 sport channel with not much content. I’d suggest there will be replays constantly

Indeed......... it will actually impact all of the streaming services as Disney's umbrella is spread so wide.

But looking at the content Disney are going to eventually make exclusive to their own service, and it's almost all of Fox 8's programming, in particular all of their animations shows.

It's going to be interesting when they want to take back ESPN.

This. Add to it that the FTA games will focus on NSW and Qld - which sounds fine in terms of supporter base until you consider the quality of the Waratahs this year. Personally I think they are better to play whatever game is rated as being the highest quality each week.

Gives us 7 seasons. The NRL is signed with Fox until 2027

From Nov - March, Foxtel/Kayo lean quite heavily on ESPN offerings to keep people interested until the big three footy codes start. I saw a notable increase in ads not just for live sports but for ESPN 30 for 30 docos (most of which are very good) so I think the Fox guys will be trying very hard to keep that ESPN agreement in place.

What rule changes and are they in the comp proper?

I think same as last year? Can't remember who, but someone kicked off straight into touch and the other team restarted with a short arm rather than a scrum, saved a good minute or two.

I assume all last year's changes are being kept, I saw the goal line drop out in the 'tahs trial and there were the 50/22 kicks too.

I registered for Stan last weekend and now have Stan and also clicked the Stan sport but can’t see anything for stan sport — is there something we should see at this stage

When you hear 'On Demand' that means you can watch it whenever you want - there'll be a library of completed games you can go into at any time.

This is the tagline being used

"Stan Sport is the only place to watch every Super Rugby match. Enjoy ad-free, live & on demand."

Sounds right, although some new things here?

Aotearoa seem to have added a captain's call.
