Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Yeah I hope so. There is just a real opportunity to do something different.

Mitchell is just Mehrtens but younger.

I just want a rugby show that is about what happens on the field, Fox Sports had one for a couple of months at one stage where it had coaches and players who answered serious questions and there was no "game show" elements or attempts at comedy.

I want good analysis of what is happening on the field and good use of footage from previous games.

I would like a current or recently retried referee to add to the broadcast, similar to the NFL where the former referees are not commentating but on standby to add a comment of something interesting happens. Proper explanations of rulings would be great

I wonder if Nige Owens feels like waking up early to dial in for our games?

GEM is in HD so no worries there, surely?

Yeah it isn't the main channel but with Friday nights being Brisvegas Loig nights there isn't much else you can do.

There are many things Nigel Owens is going to miss about refereeing the Guinness Six Nations: the pre-match butterflies, the camaraderie with players and the ‘I was there’ moments he was privileged to witness for 13 years.

But there is one luxury the former Test match referee will be able to indulge in this year: “I will be able to jump up and down and cheer,” he says.

“I will also be able to shout and moan at the ref with millions of other people.”

I think GEM is SD?

Been available as HD for capital cities since 2019 Ashes I believe, so they didn't have complaints.

https://eftm.com/2019/06/9gem-goes-...e the coverage meets, areas in the coming days.

hile Channel 9 may no longer have the rights to our “Summer of Cricket” there’s one last hurrah coming – the 2019 Ashes Series from England

To ensure the coverage meets the exacting standards of Aussie TV Sports Fans in 2019 the Nine Network have launched a second HD channel.
9Gem is now available in HD in all capital cities, and that will come to NBN broadcast areas in the coming days.
It’s a big win for sports fans, and a huge technical challenge for the broadcast team at Nine.
The new HD channel (Channel 95), like the existing main HD channel (Channel 90) is using MPEG-4 compression technology which is not compatible with all Aussie TVs.
While it’s safe to say that’s not a concern for the hard core Ashes viewer, there will be some folks trying to tune to 95 who won’t be able to view it – If you can’t watch Channel 95 – it’s time for a new TV!

I would say the same about those two

Especially AFLW, they’re lucky they got anything. They expanded way too early and haven’t amended rules to make the game more enjoyable to watch resulting in a trash product.

Loss of free to air is certainly not ideal, however with the culture of netball in this country I think their code will fare better than ours did, plus I’d challenge that getting the netty comp more professional and paying athletes accordingly is a pretty high priority

The AFLW ratings went up again last year, and half the games get bigger crowds than Super Rugby......... I think they’re going alright.

Yeah understand some people in metro areas could get away with less.

But for me, I travel a lot in regional areas, and no other network offers coverage as wide as Telstra. The premium you pay is worth it for me.

It really doesn't even compare I reckon. I've tried the rest, they even still suck in some pockets around the South East corner & certain Brisbane suburbs. I'll stick with the best. Premium or not.

Lol cause it’s at a time of year when they have pretty much zero competition from any other code, and they aren’t exactly amazing numbers that they’re improving upon

As for the crowds, do you know how many free tickets they give away? Stupidly large amounts, you can fill a stadium for anything if you give away tickets

Don’t be fooled by the AFL smokescreen, the AFLW is horrible.

Yeah, I can't think of any other football code that also begins in February.........

Can you though? Because I can see that you're also a Brumbies supporter.........

It's actually not.......... the Friday night pride match down at Whitten Oval with the Two Birds van on site is a great night out.

Anyways, you said they were lucky to get anything, which was downright hysterical......... but maybe it's the, let's say "smokescreen", of not living in an AFL state and being oblivious to the support that some of the teams attract.

Lol who hurt you

I used to work for the AFL and know people that still do work there as well as some high level umpires. They all think the same, AFLW overall was done extremely poorly and has only survived off the wealth of the AFL

Do they most of their games are played at an old oval that can now hold 15k and they are a third full plus it’s free to get in always

It’s because the two administrations had opposing views, the old administration was trying to get it off the ground a few years from now but was investing heavily in the grass roots so there was a stronger pool of players when Gil took over he went for a top down approach started the AFLW straight away half the players were picked from different sports. The AFLW is 5 years in and is only viable because of the AFL. As each year goes by and you are seeing more and more kids get drafted who have played footy all their life the comp should get better

Maybe a slight exaggeration on my part, as most matches are only attracting a few thousand or so.........

But the Bulldogs home games are steadily attracting 8,000-9000 people which I think the Brumbies or Rebels would be envious of, and there's been quite a few notable matches with large crowds - 53,000 at the lunch time final in Adelaide in 2019, 35,000 in Perth last year for the local derby, and as referenced above the opening round generally attracts good numbers.

And if they're putting it in February when fuck all else is on, that's simply smart management.

Free tickets doesn't mean people teleport into the arena ready to go. They're still making an effort to get there, purchase food and beverage, and support the team.

Can't say the same about a lot of rugby fans in Sydney. In part that is because AFL is best viewed live when you can see what is going on, while TV is a great platform for rugby @ $10 a month.

The AFL would be crazy not to invest heavily in AFLW given their financial position. It is a rapidly growing segment that has significant interest and the easiest way to improve it rapidly is to make it more professional.

It really doesn't take much in player payments to provide the ability for players to train and play enough to improve the standard rapidly.

Free tickets or not (and I believe tickets aren't free now), the games are popular. People suggesting that it's easy to fill a sporting event if the tickets are free mustn't have been to many NRC games. Whether those were free or not made a negligible difference to the crowds. Likewise things like domestic one day cricket and Sheffield Shield games.

You could hand out tonnes of free tickets to most Super Rugby games and it would only make a marginal difference to the crowds. Not many people give up an evening to do something they're not particularly interested in just because it's free.

This would be the case for every second tier sporting league. The whole point of the exercise is that they can grow AFLW at a much faster rate by investing in it rather than having to wait 150 years for it to grow to the size of the AFL through just its own means.

Women's sport, particularly in formerly male dominated sports are the growth areas. Ultimately this feeds into interest in your main product.

I find it strange how much animosity there is towards women's sport and investment in it. It's a no brainer in terms of the most effective way to grow your overall interest.
