Something needs to change. My mate, who is a diehard Wallabies fan, played rugby with him for years, texted me at halftime saying he only just found that the game was on.

If they're paying for it, they'll probably put the Super Rugby on one of the multi-channels. I'm sure it would outrate whatever 9Rush has on Saturday night.
If a Trans-Tasman happens they could show a double header on Gem or Go on a Saturday night and then have the remaining games on subscription tv.

If I hadn't seen a post on r/rugbyunion with the date and time on it I would have thought the game was yesterday as opposed to 2pm today. Now. I don't watch much TV these days but the little I saw had no advertising for the game on 10. Which is a shame as I think 10 actually do Tests quite well.

I get not knowing the specific game/time a test match is being played but to straight out not know it’s happening probably points to not being as big a supporter as someone claims to be

It’s been plastered all over social media, news articles the whole lot

I am wondering if nine take up rugby how much would be shown on FTA and main channels vs its other digital channels and on Stan

As unlike league unlikely they are going to want to put super rugby on prime time slots on its main channel

Never know, if super rugby can schedule some games which work around the nrl time slots it might allow rugby to catch some of the flow on from the NRL. And 9 can argue sell themselves a back to back hours of sport.

Not everyone uses social media, and wouldn’t say it’s been plastered through news articles. It was buried 10 pages deep in the courtier mail, which is typically pro-rugby as well.

I'm not on social media much and I thought the game was next week until two days ago ‍

Tell your mate to follow rugby.com.au or the wallabies page on twitter, intsagram or facebook. They have been posting non-stop for the past two weeks in the lead up to the game. What did your mate expect, a phone call from Rennie telling him that the Wallabies were playing this weekend?

You'd think in these fluid COVID times that you'd make an effort to find out when the games were on - as opposed to have it served up on a plate. Just a thought....
i had no idea the mungo finals started this weekend - couldn't care less - but if i did i would have made an effort.
anyway - your ignorant mate missed out.

Damn straight. I've been planning my life around it! Also talking to my mates about it etc. It's pretty hard to miss if you're even just glancing about.

I'm not really sure what people think could be done in terms of more promotion outside of social media.

TV advertising even for the broadcast owner is tricky. What shows should Channel 10 advertise a rugby test during to promote it? The likelihood is that the people who will tune in for the rugby on Sunday might not actually watch Channel 10 at any other time.

Fox Sports could certainly advertise rugby more but they did have some ads for it during the NRL finals.

For Rugby Australia, social media and a few billboards/ads at bus shelters/train stations and on the back of buses are about all that is realistic. The potential places to advertise now are far more diverse and the cut through of each of them is much lower because the audience is spread out more.

I think the big thing is getting it more reliability into the news bulletins, particularly in the week leading up to the test match. Not sure if that's necessarily on RA though, but there is plenty that can be done on their end to facilitate it, and that probably has to be happening all year.

That said they could be doing just about everything they can on this front and the tv networks just aren't biting, in which case I'm not really sure what you can do. This would be the big value of a Nine/Stan deal, they'd have much more interest in promoting the game as whole, given it'd drive sales in a product they own.

From what I can gather, the richer sports produce their own news items, and send them to the networks. We run on the smell of an oily rag these days (and some of the critics hereabouts think that even that is too extravagant).

No way we can compete when it comes to publicity. We could try messages sticks, I suppose, or writing on walls. Any volunteers?

RA does this.

Genuine query. Do the RA promoters do it anywhere near as well as the Reds machine?

Returning from Sydney to Brisbane it really struck me how much the Reds PR shat all over the Waratahs. Currently the WB promotion I see is either social media swamped by everything else or actually from the Reds. Sure my social media feeds are geared to the Reds but I would have thought equally to the WBs.

I completely understanding holding back fire power and funds for promotion of home games, but I’m not convinced RA match the Reds in this dept.

For what it is worth - I think the social media content that the Wallabies social accounts has been producing has been excellent. Wonderfully engaging with insight into the camp and more of a personal focus with the players. An example of this was the clip they posted when they announced and interviewed the debutants. Goose bump stuff.

Perhaps the Wallabies Marketing Pigeon has learned to fly?

Ultimately the TV advertising is up to the broadcasters and how much they want to push it.

I think the Rebels social media has stepped up too. Maybe it's Geoff Parling?
