The DD side is probably at a low 1st grade standard

However last year was the first year they were really put together, additionally they only play 4-5 games together a year, for the rest of the year they play with there local clubs..

I have no doubts they have what's required to step up to Premier Grade, it will take 3-4 years before they are competitive but that's the same as the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast.

I guess you could also subscribe to the theory that once the team becomes a premier team better players will want to play for them, perhaps some locals will return or a particularly good leaguie will switch over.

So idealy if the QRU were looking to expand to a 15 team comp (give or take), then you would have the current clubs:

1. Sunshine Coast (about 1 hour and a bit north of Brisbane)
2. Gold Coast (about 1 hour south of Briso)
3. Norths-QUT
4. Wests
5. Souths
6. Easts
7. Brothers
8. QLD Uni
9. Sunnybank
10. GPS

Plus:

11. Darling Downs
12. Ipswitch
13. Logan
14. Redlands
15. Team from the north.

With (hopefully) all clubs fielding premier, reserve, 3rd grade and 4th grade sides. As well as premier, reserve, 3rd grade colts.

After which point the comp would break into 5 subdistricts (for easy travell), with lesser clubs like uq law school and brisbane irish competing.

Also I think its time colts became u20's.

GPS may get a bit upset that you are going to cut them from the comp.

In regards to colts becoming U20 it will happen in about 8 years when the first year of Prep come through as the leaving age of students in Queensland will go up.

Why should it take 8 years ?? Every other Colts comp in Oz seems to be Under 20 ?

In regards to the colts, in theory QLD kids should be a bit younger and therefore warant the younger age limit, but alot of guys nowdays (especially rugby players) are a year older when they finish school anyways.

In most cases its only really a 6 month differeance in age, and you might as well just make it u20 to fit in with the rest of the country.

the problem with these teams is, while some may have the facilities and backing etc to field a premier team, they just dont have the quality of players. Look at the trial games each year, when premier teams play others, the scores are usually blow outs. Plus it will take a while because usually any player who is up to a premier standard normally goes to a premier club to try and play at the higher level. Its possible that they may eventually be able to field competetive teams but a lot of work will have to go into development, etc.

Obviously teams cant step up from day1, however with planning the time required to become competitive at premier grade level can be minimised.
Gold Coast joined Premier Grade in 1996, prior to that they had nothing. In 2001 they finished 2nd and eventually finished premiers in 2004. Sunshin Coast joined the competition in 2005, and depending on a few more results, 2010 looks to be there first year that they will make the finals.

It does take time, but both these teams built largely competitive teams by developing the talent within there regions(and a few imports;) )

Yes but the problem is i believe, that a 17yr old cant play in a U20's competition, considering the majority of QLDers dont tell 18 until the year after they finish school it could create problems, leave some players in limbo.

However what they could do is make a Premier U20's, and leave 1st grade, 2nd grade as colts, but then you have the unique situation where a forward not good enough for U20's but is to old for Colts has to step up to grade level.

Why can't a 17 year old play u20's?

Is that a law or are you just implying that at 17 years of age bloke's are not developed enough to play at under 20 level?

Logan would be a good addition, they have a huge islander population

I'm born and bred Logan boy, but Played for east Brisbane all my life.(tiny bit for Sunnybank) Not much happening for Logan because of the Islander Base. And trust me they have tried. Great size but no Skill at all and that the truth. But Brisbane Premier Rugby needs something..
I don't know what, It's like knowing the Wallabies need something but what. May a good kick in the Butt to the RA RA daddy's who run the job. Forget there RM Williams boots and posh SUV's and bring back the game.
Quade Cooper prime example looking at playing touch NRL. thanks to a greedy board....

True. I would make the argument that once you finish school you should be graded on ability rather than age. Mainly because some blokes dont mature untill they are 20, while some are huge at the age of 17.

In general terms, it means that the smaller guys dont have to mix it with the big guys, assuming the big strong guys make prem colts, and the smaller guys play colts 3 level...

I am of the understanding that in Sydney Colts 3 is an U19 comp while the rest of colts rugby is U20. I don't have an issue with this happening in Qld, I think it would be a great idea. I just don't think that they will do it.

A 17 year old who is deemed good enough to play open, or U20, rugby can be signed off by a level 2 coach to allow them to play. Liam Gill is a good example of this. They even changed the rule of the JRWC so that he could play.

I think Logan could make a success of a Premier team. They have been unlucky with about 3 ground they have been linked to failing to get the go ahead.

Maybe the QRU could make Premier Colts a U20 side and leave the other colts sides as U19... Whilst there are plenty of lads out there physically developed enough to step up and play U20's, there are just as many who arent physically developed enough, you run risk of alienating these guys and worse, making the risk of injury to high.

yeah your absolutely right, islanders have absolutely no skill, highlighted by there remarkably below average representation in the NRL and Super14 :lmao::lmao:
